Thumbs up Audi A6 - 1,865 kms on a single tank!

Glad to see the luxury segment pushing the fuel efficiency envelope to new heights!

Averaging 78 KM/H, an auto journalist and a race driver have managed to cover a total of 1865 KMs on a single tank of diesel! (73 Liters) !

A point to note is that the car was completely stock and no enhancements were made to maximize efficiency.

It's not out of the ordinary. Nearly all cars from this segment have a fuel tank that can hold ~70 liters (including the India-spec luxo barges).

@ Vinair: The Audi's record is beaten by a couple in a VW Passat. They did about 2,600 kms on a single tank - link to nytimes.com article.

Yups, agree, there are even driven in India that have clocked some crazy numbers way beyond this and in our kind of traffic! However, what's interesting is to see how the luxury marques are not just talking about employing new tech in order to improve efficiency but its there on the plate for anyone to taste it! Now that's commendable!

Drove the face-lifted A6 Ultra with all the new added tech to improve efficiency. We managed 16kmpl on narrow roads, city traffic, 2 lane highways, and uphill and downhill drives - and this is without driving carefully to maximize efficiency.

Similarly, got nearly 13kmpl on a 730D on similar roads, with a little bit of redlining thrown in as well.

All of this without the help of the efficiency mode, auto start/stop, A/C on at all times, etc.

In comparison, back in India, the Laura would just about manage that much on a regular drive with an eye on the needle.

Trick is: good roads, good traffic discipline - all of which enable a smooth drive!

I have achieved 21.6 kms/litre on a drive from Pune to Mumbai with a very light pedal and not exceeding 80 km/hr during the journey. Increasing speed to 90, 100 & 110 I have got 18.5, 17 & 16 kms/litre respectively.

Also I have driven from Bangalore to Pune (844 kms) consuming approx. 55 litres. Could easily have driven another 400 kms. All this when the car had 4 adults and the trunk filled with luggage

If driven carefully, these cars give very good mileage
