Default YetiBLog® - 27th August 2008

Good Morning!!

Good Lord!!

People really have to be up and early here in Germany. Jenny rushes off to the breakfast buffet and I follow in a little while.
The Maritim has probably the best breakfast buffet I have ever seen in my entire life. I have stayed here twice before and each time this hotel has never failed to deliver the most perfect, massive breakfast ever.

It is great to be catching up with all my colleagues from all over the world and time flies by. Too fast for her and she needs to leave.
No worries, says I, somebody will drop me.

And sure enough, someone from the German office finishes his breakfast and offers to drop me in his beautiful Chrysler.

The Yeti's European Odyssey - It begins again from pg 12-img0053_thumb.jpg

The Yeti's European Odyssey - It begins again from pg 12-img0054_thumb.jpg

I spend the day working a little. It's Wednesday already and tomorrow the Indian sub-continent will visit us. Unfortunately the hotel cannot promise us rooms until 3 p.m. and I must quickly think of a way to keep everyone occupied as they arrive at 9am.
Thankfully the weather is great.

----------------

If there is truly something unreliable it is the weather in Germany. Over my entire trip I was truly able to realise how true this is. Some days would begin bright and sunny, temperatures at 25 to 28 degrees and that very day it would rain heavily and it would drop t 13 and below making it awful and gloomy.
I longed for sunny days as it would be truly magnificent, cool breeze and the bright sun, long walks through the streets...

In fact almost all our guests called me

How is the temperature there?
thandi-vandi hai ya kya? Sweater laayen?
(Should we bring our sweaters?)
I always gave the same answer Bright and Sunny!! Tee-shirt weather, forget about those sweaters!!
An answer I would sorely regret later.

-----------------------------

I spend half a day at the messe. I am not really working, almost everything is done by now. I continue my restaurant research for the special dinner on Friday. We have decided to do an Indian dinner and I am desperately looking for absolutely top class restaurants to entertain 15 people. I make some calls and finally I connect with a German Gentleman who is the manager of the Amrit Group of restaurants in Berlin. before I decide to do some explorations and bookings.

Amrit & Mirchi exotische Restaurants in Berlin.

René suggests a fixed menu and I am inclined to go for that rather than have a meleé at the table. He makes the first suggestion and I have to call him back almost immediately.

The Yeti's European Odyssey - It begins again from pg 12-picture-1.png

René I cannot possibly offer my guests Samosas.
But it is the specialty of the house!
Uhh... we have to remove the Samosas from the dinner menu.
As you wish then, we can change anything.

René is an excellent manager, he makes some good wine and beer suggestions and I explain that many of our guests are pure veg and also that Shravan is on so he will have to be careful.

After a few times back and forth, by the evening the final menus are ready.
He has offered me an excellent price. Everything looks great for Friday night.

We are to visit the new branch at Winterfeld Stasse in Schoneberg. So that takes care of that. Unfortunately the unlimited drinks are only Beer and Wine. Everything else is by the menu.

I leave the Messe (The fairgrounds are called Messe in Germany) with my Map in my hand. On my way out I stop at the public toilet in the Messe.

Germany does its very best to destroy my beautiful image of Villeroy and Boch, lol.
The Yeti's European Odyssey - It begins again from pg 12-dsc_1584_thumb.jpg

I decide not to check out the restaurants, opting to walk to Theodor-Heuss Platz and take the U-Bahn.
Almost every city in Germany is full of little green pockets at every corner where people can eat lunch or relax and enjoy the sun. Berlin is certainly no exception and the green areas present in Berlin are extraordinary, more on that later.

Unfortunately the machine does not accept my 50euro note and I step out again, to buy something from the Bäckerei.
I sit at Theodor-Heuss, enjoying my little roll and my beer.
The beer is excellent. I make a silent pact with myself to drink as much of it as I can, resolving to consume at least 3 to 4 litres of this delicious golden gift from the Gods on a daily basis.

Later I take the U-bahn to Potsdamer Platz, a living breathing piece of modern history.

Here is a picture of the station.

Sam, why Indian food? You are in the land of Sauerkraut and Bratwurst. Pagal Aadmi!

BTW, there is atleast one Mumbai Hotel that has Vileroy and Boch in the loo.

Chryslers are imports into Germany and hence probably more expensive than German marques. Besides Chrysler was the first brand to collaborate with JBL much like GM did with Delco and Bose ( this was in '83-'84). GM fired first using Bose for their Cadillac Seville, Buick Riviera and Oldsmobile Toronado. The rest as they say is history with everyone from B&O, THX, Dolby getting into this act.

Hi Sam,

Time and again I have told that you are living my dream life and you did correct me telling that it's your dream life too. Now I want a favour. I want to touch you once in my life time so that I can inherit some (all) of your life in my next life!!

I have finished reading this whole thread in a single GO, I loved it. You have magic in your hands. You know how to tell stories. You take us from one topic to the other (often moving off track!!) and bring us back to automobiles (may be to entice the moderators!!). You rock!! God bless you always. The photographs are excellent and so are you.

I am blushing. Thank you for your kind words. Thank you very much.

It is true. I make it a point every now and then to fool everyone into thinking this thread is about cars

Sam, I want to know two things. One is if that Becker stuff will come to India, the second is if Indian share prices will rise again so I can afford it...

No, seriously, the second is quite different.

I've been seeing on the net nano-technology stuff. In terms of surface treatments it looks like it makes Teflon old-fashioned. As well as surface treatments for architectural and domestic steel, concrete, whatever, there is also stuff for car paintwork, and glass. I dream of the day I can just blow on my car and all the dust blows off. No... I dream of the day that a forcefield doesn't allow to land in the first place!

Here's the first link I discovered (Australian), and here's a link to a German company. I understand the technology comes from Germany.

If you are wandering aisles of bits, pieces, cleaning stuffs and treatments, I'd be interested to know if you come across this.

Maybe we could import it and say, you can always tell a Team-BHPer by the way his car always sparkles!

(You can always tell Thad by the way he only washes the car when it is really filthy!)

Yes it will. But Becker is not ready for the Indian after-market just yet.
On an OEM level it is already present of course.

Thanks for that.

It'd be just like me to buy a very expensive radio with a free car attached!
