Default YetiBlog - 30th August 2008 - It's bright and sunny again!

I have planned a sightseeing trip for our guests with a little help from Jenny earlier.

I have taken her advice and instead of offering the regular bus through Berlin, we opt for the boat cruise instead.

So Jenny wrote to Reederei-Reedel and confirmed the itinerary and the time. Armed with this information, (it was all in German so I carried a printout to be safe) I contacted the lady a week before i left asking the following:

Quote:
Dear Frau Kaerger,

Thank you for the reservation confirmation below.

I would like to reconfirm that 13 persons will be present on Saturday 30th August before 9:30 am, at the Haus der Kulturen der Welt (John-Foster-Dulles-Allee). We will take the 1.5 hour tour from 9.30 to 11.00am and all of us will need English headsets.

We will pay you a total of 8,50(boat-tour)+3,00(headset) Euros per person.

We are staying at:
Maritim Hotel Berlin
Stauffenbergstrasse 26
D-10785 Berlin

1. Will we get a boat with an Oberdeck
2. Do you accept credit cards?

Many thanks in advance for your help. I can be reached on +4917649152XXX from the 26th Of August onwards.

Regards,
Sam Kapasi
With typical efficiency, the reply was quick

Dear Sam,

thanks for your mail. On saturday 30th of August 2008 is driving a ship
with no upper deck. In annex you get some photos, the shipname is
Spree-Blick. You can pay cash or with EC-Card, but not with a credit
card. If you want we can do the payment on account after the cruise,
than I need your address for account.

with best regards

Stefanie Kärger

It seemed like it was not far from the hotel. Jenny suggested a walk through the gorgeous TierGarten. I visited mapss.google and got this most clear and incredible walking directions.

The Yeti's European Odyssey - It begins again from pg 12-picture-5_thumb.jpg

I saved it on my mobile and we were in business.

It is amazing to me how a bustling (well, relatively) city like Berlin can have a massive forest in the city centre. Truly, this has been built around the TierGarten. I also learn that Tier means animals and so this is an animal park, or forest.
The Tiergarten goes around for many square kilometres, right in the city and like most other German cities, has areas for relaxation, swimming and sun-bathing. An area is restricted for FKK or free-body-culture, a clothes -free environment.

Also it is amazing to all of us how many people ride bicycles here, in the city. Red lanes on every sidewalk indicate a bicycle path and they are very, very popular here, in the city and through the tierpark.

While we wake up on time and are done with breakfast, my managing director and his wife are a bit late. They decide to take the cab to the boat, while we begin our walk.

The walk is truly enjoyable, however due to a wrong turn, we end up further away than we expected. While we try to walk quickly, we are delayed seriously. Calling the boat company results in nothing, it is a saturday and Stefanie is off.

When I explain my predicament, explaining that we are about 10 minutes late, the lady flatly says
Herr Kapasi, the ship will not wait.

The MD messages - where are you? We're waiting on the boat.
I look at my watch. 09.25 - It does not look like we'll make it.
I message back - You go ahead, doesn't look like we will make it on time.

We're still walking, but slowly now. For some reason we're still going towards the dock. My phone rings.
Where are you now?
At the Brandenburg turn.
Can you please hurry up?
Is the boat waiting?
I am making it wait, please run.

We walk as quicly as 11 people can walk.

0935 - we have not reached.

The phone rings again.

Have you reached the culture house?
No but I can see it.
For God's sake will you guys please just run? This is both stupid and embarrassing.
Is the ship still waiting?
YES, now will you guys just RUN!!??

We break into a run. Eventually we're on the boat at 0945- we have successfully managed to delay a German boat by 15 minutes. Everyone looks angrily at us as we step in panting and apologising.
We catch our breath, put out headphones on and we're off on a beautiful journey.

Not only a I getting a fresh perpective at Berlin, it is a sunny saturday and people are outside, along the sprees and banks, chilling with their beers and doggies. It is wonderful

Oh beautiful Berlin, where the new and old exist in perfect harmony. I order myself a weissbier and I enjoy the commentary. The boat ride goes on for an hour and a half and I take a few pictures.

It's really amazing how major European cities have preserved gardens and rivers/canals so beautifully.

And here in our country every garden and river/nullah/gutter is being taken over so that ugly buildings can be built.

And, in the same pic, the person who has turned around for the photo, on the left side of the pic, is one of the brothers who have their car audio shop in Koramangala, right?

Awesome pictures, as usual, Sam makes a wonderful story writer, making something as mundane as a leisurely walk in the park and subsequently getting late into a interesting read.

Great photos. Could we have more photos please.

regards

Default YetiBlog® - 30th August 2008 - continued

The boat ride is over. We decide to spend the day relaxing in Berlin, absorbing the city life.

We walk upto the Bellevue S-Bahn station and take a train to Wittenberg Platz so we can shop at KaDeWe.

At the station i come across N_C's favourite subject - Der Zug.

Shopping at the Kaufhaus Des Westens is a wonderful experience as always, I always make it a point to spend time here and eat at the gourmet floor right on top.

From Wikipedia
Quote:
The store was originally founded in 1905 by Adolf Jandorf, who persuaded the famous architect Emil Schaudt to build his store. It opened in March 27th, 1907 with an area of 24,000 sqm.

In 1927, ownership changed to the Hertie company owned by Hermann Tietz. The Hertie Company was responsible for modernizing and expanding the store. They had the ambition to add two new floors but because of the Nazi rise to power in the 1930s their plans came to a sudden halt. The Hertie Company was mainly Jewish owned and because of the Nazi's race laws they were prevented from maintaining their ownership. During World War II the allied bombing runs ruined most of the store. One of the bombers was shot down and crashed into KaDeWe in 1943. Most of the store was gutted which caused the store to close. The re-opening of the first two floors was celebrated in 1950. They completed the construction of all seven floors by 1956.

Once completed it became a beacon of hope for Berliners. "KaDeWe" soon became a symbol of the regained economic power of Germany during the Wirtschaftswunder economic boom, as well as emblematic of the material prosperity of West Berlin versus that of the East Berlin.

Between 1976-1978 the store's floor space was expanded from 24,000 sqm to 44,000 sqm. Just after the fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989, KaDaWe recorded a record breaking number of people going through the store. By 1996, with another floor with a restaurant added to the store, its sales area had expanded to 60,000 sqm.
In 1994, the KarstadtQuelle AG corporation acquired Hertie and with it KaDeWe. Most of the floors were renovated between 2004 and 2007 in preparation for the store's one hundredth anniversary.

Later we walk along the Kurfurstendamm (Affectionately called the Ku'Damm) and end up at a sunny cafe for some beer and food.
Here you can see us enjoying our half litre wiessenbiers. A few glasses are filled with Alkohol-Frei Beck's (due to Shravan).

The weekend around the Kaiser-Wilhelm church (The city centre at the Berlin-Zoo) is always a wonderful carnival. The atmosphere is vibrant, full of little shops and food and street performers, it is thoroughly enjoyable.

We see the German girls dressed up so well, young and old people - some shopping, some chilling some catching up with friends, it is great. I'll let some pictures give you a feel of the atmosphere.

That's because of their FE. LOL.

I am still wondering why/how ONE guy made all of you (even "the Boss") drink Alchohol free beer.

No Navin, only 3 or 4 people drank Alkohol-Frei. Me, I kept my word and drank at least 3 litres of good cloudy white beer every single day.

Wow those beer glasses look nice. I can't make my mind on which one is better looking - The tall ones or the curved ones. Heck, I'm getting thirsty now and all I can drink is water.

Sam, are you gonna be in town during Oktoberfest? If yes, please do take some pics for me. It's my dream to go to the Oktoberfest one day.
