Actually it is quite common in Europe, especially with super-soft and feather pillows.

Default YetiBlog® - 5th Sep 2008 - Hemsfurth-Edersee

The beautiful little town of Hemsfurth-Edersee (quite a mouthful innit) awaits us.
I wake early up in the morning and step out onto the balcony.

Stunning.

I have no toothbrush or any toiletries. Everything is in the car parked down. I walk through the creaky stairs out past the bar which also functions as the reception.
There is nobody there. One couple is eating their breakfast in one corner.

I yank up my huge bag out of the car (it is a right royal pain with these 2 door cars when you have heavy luggage in the rear seat) and pull it across the street and open the door of the hotel.
Now a young lady is at the bar/welcome desk.

I smile and continue dragging my bag in. She asks me to wait. I suddenly realise that she has no clue who I am. It obviously looks like I slept all night in my car and am trying to drag my bag into the hotel!

Hallo, wie kann ich Ihnen helfen?
Uh... no thanks we're already here, living here heh heh.
Huh?
No speak Englisch. Sorry.
Oh Crap.
Uh, wir sind im zimmer seben. Schon.
I wave my key.
Ah,
she understands.
Perhaps it was a mistake to try to reply in German. Madame now wants to have a whole conversation with me.
sind Sie allein?
Nein, ich bin mit mein fiancee.

She asks me some more questions, I try hard to reply in my broken German.
Finally I lose all patience.

Jenny, mein fiancee, ist deutsch und sie, uh, schlafe... uhhh I point upwards making a sleeping sign.Again she understands and nods brightly. I drag my bag upstairs.

Later we are dressed and down for breakfast. I take a few pictures of the hotel. It is really old-school.

Take a look at the really hardcore sausages for breakfast, lol. They were strong smelling and made from the wild boars and other animals.

After breakfast I drag our bags back out to the car and make a picture of our hotel and the road outside.

It makes perfect sense to check out right away. We will be travelling all day and do not want to be bound to returning to this lodge.

It is beautiful and interesting though. Everything is traditional, slow and very very German. I once again am grateful to life for giving me TheOne®
Thanks to her, I am getting to see a side of Germany that is very very difficult for a tourist to see. I would have probably never seen this if it wasn't for her. And it's beautiful!

it's going to be a great day

Default Beautiful Rural Germany

I am stunned to find that the quality of life in these rural parts is still amazing. Perhaps what is a little disturbing is the lack of people, we see very few - as you can see from my pictures.

The homes are expensive and well-constructed, the cars are of a good quality, the roads are excellent. And the cleanliness of it all, stunning. A bit antiseptic sometimes, but beautiful nonetheless.

There is a lot of agricultural land here, but even the quality of machines used for the agriculture are fantastic.

For an Indian person who has associated the word rural with poor and uneducated his whole life, this kind of living is an eye-opener and very fascinating.

Some pictures:

I have talked to German travelers who actually enjoy a little Indian filth and Indian "random" infrastructure. They say things like, "Germany is a little too perfect." believe it or not.

I watch a professional photographer with his cameras and various lenses waiting near the valley. He seems to be a man with greater patience than I.

Bang on. That is something I can never sell to my friends - whoever travels to Europe - I recommend a day driving through the German countryside, but I am only met with blank stares

The only place that trumps it is Switzerland (Interlaken) and its water bodies. Clean beyond belief.

I have been through switzerland often and it is truly beautiful. What puts me off with places like Interlaken and more is that a level of sheen and tourist appeal must be maintained (the income is almost 100% tourism based) and therefore IMO is less real than rural Germany.
I hope you understand.

That's how the pillows at my home used to look like when my brothers and I were kids. Not because they were soft and fluffy but because my brothers and I used to sit on them and move around the room as if we were riding scooters.

We crossed the photographer twice with a little cart full of his monopods and tripods and lenses and camera bodies.
There I was clutching to my little D40 and Nikon 70-300 staring at his Sigma 300-800mm. Dammit.

That's spot on :-) Working for a German MNC, I hear this often !

@Sam, if you like the German rural setting, do visit the Bavarian country side and also the Austrian villages. Amazingly beautiful and green, and in Austria, you have the Alps presenting another dimension altogether...

Hey we got a Tony Roma's in Windsor (Canada) too where I live. I guess it's part of the same franchise. Amazing ribs I must say.
