Default Evening at bad nauheim - 5th Sep 2008

It is an uneventful drive, through some beautiful and picturesque areas.

We finally reach the quiet little town of Bad Nauheim. We will stay at Jenny's sisters home.

Knock knock!!

After we have said our hellos to the adults, the kids come storming into the home and are so happy.
Here they are, opening their presents from India.

Little Celia plans to be an artist.

And beautiful Julia, who intends on looking more beautiful with her new earrings.

It is a happy evening, full of home-made pizza and cheer. The kids are dancing, the music is playing and the house is warm.

They say that luck always stands by the side of the traveller.

Bad Nauheim has an annual wine festival at the famous roman bath. On one day of the year, the people of the town collect for a fun evening full of music and dancing. Various little stalls are put up that serve red and white wine from across Europe.

That one day of the year is today.

After an early supper, Jenny and I get dressed - time for the Bad Nauheim Wine festival.

Sam, I just love your flowing style. You should really try publishing a book on travel; do consider writing for travel magazines at the very least. There is always something so happy and full of life about your writing and pictures, I feel like I am there with you on your walk through the park and your rest on the bench. Its just wonderful.

Sam,
Which driving license did you use in Germany to drive?
Indian license with IDP is sufficient?

I love the cameraman story. Things like that can transform a whole year, let alone a trip!

Not OT at all - The IDP is a pointless document in Germany do not waste your time with it.

The Indian driving license is valid in Germany for a period of six months.
Yes, the same license that says "Valid in India" - I can confirm this, because if you remember in February, I had to submit my license to BMW in Munich. I have a regular Maharashtra state driving license.

You must carry your Passport along with you, just your license is insufficient. Your passport will clearly show your date of entry into Germany.

If you're going to stay in Germany for longer than 6 months and drive during this time, you must hand in your Indian license, give the exam at a driving school, do the physical tests (vision, reflex etc.) then do a first aid course, know each and every traffic sign, finally a driving test and then get a German license.

It costs about (I hope you are sitting down) beteen 500 to 700 euros to get this license.

I can confirm that having rented cars on my Indian license many times. You don't require IDP if you license is in English. If its in a non-Roman alphabet (like Hindi), you do need a IDP along with your license. IDP never replaces your license.
Be aware, that all the states surrounding Germany don't have this rule. Austria, Italy, Switzerland, France and others do require an IDP regardless of the language of your Indian license.
I was lucky to drive ~2800km in Austria and not get hauled up because I honestly thought the rules are same there as in Germany (I had enquired about the German part from 2 car rental companies). Luckily, I only got the speed ticket on the German side of the border, thank heavens for that.
Cheers,

Flashback:

I am driving to Bad Nauheim as Jenny speaks on the phone to her sister.
She finishes the call.

Baby, would you like to go to a Weinfest? A wine festival?
Is that one of those festivals where you taste wines from various provinces?
Yes, it is in Bad Nauheim! It's once a year. If you like we can go after dinner.
Yes I'd like that.
Then it's settled.

I drive on for a few minutes breathing the fresh air and smiling thinking of the good German white wine I will try.

I've been to a wine tasting in France, it was great fun.
Really?
Yeah, so do you taste and spit out the wine?
Spit, what do you mean?
I make the action of sipping wine, swirling it around in my mouth and spitting it out.
She looks at me in horror with her big beautiful eyes.
No no no, we are Germans! We drink it all!!
But then you'll get completely drunk!
YES, that's why Germans go to wine festivals haha.

Default The Bad Nauheim WeinFest

Jenny's BIL drops us to the place after dinner. Unfortunately the unexpected has happened.

I have forgotten my camera!

I stand there whining and hoping that somehow we will go back to get the camera. It's not happening.
I'm sulking and thinking of how now I'll have to use my especially horrid Blackberry for the festival.

We pay our 1 euro and enter the place. Wow! I had no idea that so many people lived in Bad Nauheim!

It is a carnival, bands are playing loud, there are wine stalls everywhere, people are standing and shouting over the music to each other, some standing near the medicinal water, some around small bands and performers, there's food and wine everywhere.

We meet Jenny's younger sister and her Boyfriend along with their group of friends. Many are already high and having great fun. I see that this wine festival is not really about being posh. I even see people walking around with entire bottles of red or white wine held to their mouth.

Some wine?
shouts Jenny, laughing above the crowd.
Of course!
Let's go here.

I order some Riesling and Jenny orders something else. We pay 2 euros extra for nice wine glasses instead of silly plastic cups. The 2 euros is a Pfand (Deposit).
We walk around as she says her hellos to all the people from the little town. She was born here and lived here her whole life till she left to study.

The wine is heady, the music is fun the evening is great. Clearly I am the only Indian there, lol.

We spend a wonderful evening there and leave in a bit. It will be a long but peaceful walk home. It is late and dark. Many people are a bit drunk from the fest.
We get home quietly (we have a key) but Jenny's sis and BIL are still up. A little fun chat and we excuse ourselves and hit the sack.

What a great day this has been. Goodnight!!

Default Thank you!

Hey Sam,

Me and my mom have read all of your travelogues to Germany. Mom has an MA in German, so she's kinda fascinated about the country. I was planning to go for my MS at IMTEK, Freiburg. But it fell through due to Anna University taking it's sweet time giving me my certificates.

To say that your travelogues have been eye openers would be a gross understatement. Thank you so much for taking your time to write these posts, letting us back home travel through your camera lens and keyboard

I would probably go in October 2009.

Now to find a job to carry me till then...

Default YetiBlog® - 6th Sep 2008

It's a relaxed and fun morning. The kids wake us up and later we're relaxing with Julia when she suggests that we go to the public swimming pool.

Jenny looks at me questioningly and I nod with a big smile.

Let's go swimming.

The public swimming pool is huge with many different swimming pools, one large indoor wave pool, one warm-water outdoor pool and one cold water outdoor pool. It is a little crowded as it is a Saturday today.

We have a GREAT time as you can see.

Sam, in the picture where Celia is checking out the blue (box) toy, I see a box of some Triumph accessory in the background. Does anyone in the house have a Triumph motorcycle?

It actually reminds me of a dance sequence involving Madhuri Dixit. Dhak Dhak Karne laga.
