Right from the beginning it was evident that other companies too were involved. Otherwise VW will not act alone and do something that's (apparently) so stupid. Perhaps this was the ugly trade secret, just like a Robin Cook thriller.

Now that news -that other companies too were involved- is IMO, the first nail in the coffin for Diesel. The beginning of the end...

The EU will be forced to snap subsidies for diesel cars and diesel will be viewed with suspicion. That's something you can call as double whammy.

Some hints of shifting focus from one market to other:

Audi sees a market for at least 50,000 luxury cars a year in the short to medium term.

The current market size is estimated to be 35,000 to 37,000. It is not always volumes that decide the No. 1, and being No. 1 in mind share is very important, he said. "If they say Audi is the hottest brand, we would like it and that is what we are working on," he said. "Of course, the growth pattern will not be always a double-digit one..."

Audi is contemplating assembling a 2-litre diesel engine (code named EA288) from 2016-17 in India through group company Volkswagen India. It is likely to power more than half of Audi's current portfolio — the A3, A4, A6 to the Q3, Q5. It is also likely to be offered on the A1 and Q1, which are under works.

This EA288 engine looks like different than the one which led to pull VW in current controversies.

I totally agree that at this price, this is the best (in my opinion). The only car I'm considering now is Figo Titanium plus 1.5. I have not driven the vehicle. It has got power, torque, but according to the official review for Aspire, Ford is not Ford anymore with a different suspension, steering wheel setup . Also the build quality is poor. Otherwise I would have paid for this car already due to the VW scandal.
My position too is similar, after dreaming about a GT TSI for 2 years , booked it on 12th. Expecting delivery by Oct 15. And now they have launched the Figo AT 2 lac cheaper. And now this! Not sure if, as a customer, I will have to face any hardships due to this scandal or if I should consider other cars such as Figo

http://auto.ndtv.com/news/report-cla...its-1222843?fb

"BMW's X3 xDrive equipped with 20d diesel motors produce gas emissions that are 11 times higher than European limits.

"All these data show that the problem is not specific to VW," Peter Mock from ICCT was quoted as saying.

the report immediately sent BMW shares down by almost 10 percent"

Isn't this also be seen as a failure of testing agencies which are so much poorly designed and implemented that they can't test a car as per real world driving conditions? We know reality of various Indian car testing scenes but this was amusing to see American test setup failing in catching cars with such big flaws and now news coming from European agencies. I don't understand whats the sense of having such useless test setups when they are not able to catch the flaws until those are pointed by some outsiders.

Strangely no one is raising question on the testing agencies and their accountability.

Hope the different drive modes given by Germans is not another way of cheating the tests. My guess is tests are always done in eco mode or comfort mode, whatever they call them.
They were also encouraged by the fact that everyone including the authorities knew that real world emissions were much higher always.

Why would they refund the purchase price of the car. This is not like selling lemons: it is very likely that the owners of those cars have been having a great experience.

There may be a customer sector who feel cheated because they made their purchase on the basis of environmental concerns. They might feel that a large donation to an appropriate charity might be in order, but, frankly, most people who feel that strongly are probably riding bicycles, not driving cars, anyway.

All that may, of course, totally change, if governments say that those cars have to be taken off the road unless and until fixed. If VW (etc?) could not make the cars legal before, how will they do it now?

VW hired BP oil spill lawyers. Remember BP was almost bankrupt due to the oil spill and it's not intentional from their side.

Just a thought, anybody genuinely concerned with the environment would never ever buy a diesel, not even a modern one!

That is highly unlikely. Governments cannot punish the consumer for the fault of the manufacturer. There could be a huge backlog of vehicles for fixing after recall, given the magnitude of the scam as projected by the media. Might take months to years to fix all the cars if VW has the technology to fix it. Till then how can government say that people should keep their cars off the road. I am keeping my fingers crossed and watching what unfolds silently.

On a lighter vein, I could not stop myself from sharing this. I Overheard that apparently a VW emits as much emission as 10 auto-rickshaws and hence it's tagline - Das Auto 😀.

It is going to depend on the country, the law, and how serious, or actually dangerous, an individual case is., but I would say that, yes, they can. I am not actually suggesting that, in this case, they would.

I was just pointing out that it would take something this extreme for VW to have a financial liability to customers, other than fixing their cars. They have not caused them any financial loss...

(Love arguing with myself in my own post!)

...but, even as I write, loss of resale value occurs to me as being an actual loss. Class action in USA? Please understand that I am letting my imagination run here. I don't even know anything about US law.

I was shocked and sad upon reading about Volkswagen and emissions test. But shall we consider another possible scenario:

This thing surfaced because of internal politics in Volkswagen or because of a clue from some competitor. Not just Volkswagen but many companies have done (and are doing) such things, only they have not been exposed. Volkswagen is neither the first nor the last to do such things.

Does this seem possible?

I believe the case is not just about pollution but fooling the system. In simple words, cheating.
