Default First Indian to exhibit at Detroit International Auto Show

While no Indian automotive company has ever made it to the Detroit International Auto Show,
an engg. student from Pune, Aditya Vilas Rajderkar
who's doing his Master's at Michigan U. has been invited to exhibit
at the Detroit Int'l Auto Show.

During a 4-month summer internship, Aditya and five other students:
two others from Michigan U. and three students from College of Creative Studies, designed and engineered
three entirely new concept vehicles, along with the entire chassis and body.
Their work included doing the crash protection mathematical analysis for front, roof and side impact,
3D-modelling, manufacturing and assembly of the vehicles.

The task was to design concept vehicles for three different markets: (GenX, Baby Boomers and Millennial).

Choosing a predetermined car design: crossover, luxury sedan or sports car; Univ. of Michigan engg. students along with College of Creative Studies (CCS) students, were to research into new design concepts appealing to the target market segment, societal mktg objectives, competition and economic influences as related to the theme.
They had to understand environmental responsibility in fuel economy, crash safety issues, recycleability, manufacturability and cost.
Finally the design had to be a steel vehicle (not carbon-fibre/fibre-glass) using the best capabilities of the materials, projecting the theme of “my other car is….” – fun, freedom, style, safety and economy.

The work was paid for by the American Iron and Steel Institute (AISI).
AISI and GM were impressed enough with all three designs
to give him a display booth at the Detroit International Auto show 2007, which will be held 7th-Jan 2007 to 21-Jan 2007.

Their designs will be officially unveiled tomorrow, 13th September, before media,
press and top US auto industrialists and designers.

Just checked an article on TOI about an Indian making it to the Detroit auto show . Here are some extracts.

"An engineering student from Pune - considered as Detroit of the east - Aditya Rajderkar who is currently doing his MS at Michigan University has achieved something that has won him a place at the prestigious International Auto Show to be held at Detroit during January 7 to 21, 2007.

Aditya’s team comprising three students each from Michigan University and College of Creative Studies was sponsored by American Iron and Steel Institute (AISI) which supplies steel for all the vehicles made in the USA

Aditya stated that during the four months the students not only designed entirely new vehicles but also engineered the body structure and the chassis for them. “We did the en-tire analysis for crash protection of passengers (front, roof and side impacts), 3D modelling, manufacturing and assembly of the vehicles”, he said."

The fact that not even a single automotive company from India has made it to the Detroit International Auto show makes the above very commendable. (i.e. Apart from the Aston Martin AMV8 Vantage starred at the Detroit Auto Show 2003. Dilip Chhabria developed the prototype as part of a Ford contract)

Pat on the back, Mr. Aditya Rajderkar. Kudos to a Indian representation to the mammoth of American shows.

Indian talent is obviously recognised in the areas of engineeing, IT etc. This is now taking it within the automotive industry!

Lets have a look at the design, once the pictures are available.
