Default VW group design chief Walter Maria De Silva resigns

Walter Maria De Silva, head of the VW group design, has officially resigned from the company, though he will continue his association with the group in an advisory capacity. De Silva became the group's passenger car brand design head in February 2007. He will leave the company at the end of November, though a reason for his resignation has not been cited in VW's official statement.

De Silva joined the Volkswagen group 17 years ago when he became head of the SEAT design centre in 1998. In 2002, he was put in charge of the design of the Audi brand group, including Audi, Lamborghini and SEAT. Among the vehicles designed by De Silva are the Alfa 156 (1997) and 147 (2001), the Volkswagen up!, Polo and the Golf 6 and 7, Audi R8 and the Audi A5.

It is unknown who will replace De Silva, with many wondering if the position could be axed in order to grant greater autonomy to individual brands in the group.

Well the designs from the house of VW were getting a bit predictable of late, its high time a rejiggle happened and now its inevitable given the scale of exits from experienced people over the past 5 years :

Walter DeSilva : Head of VWAG design the latest to exit.
Luc Donckerwolke : Head of design for Bentley quit last year end.
Peter Schreyer : Head of Audi design quit 9 years ago alongwith 4 of his assistants to move to Kia.
Robert Lesnick : Moved to Kia alongwith Peter Schreyer
Frank Van Meel : Chief engineer of Audi Quattro technical division (well they do take part in design of components & aerodynamics) to BMW M Division.

While the high-end brands like Bentley have no problem with design I hope the lower end brands like VW/Skoda etc depart completely from the current look and establish a new face to go with the change from the current crisis.

This is the man who designed the Polo! One of the most timeless designs around. I'm also a big fan of the Jetta. VW's designs are somehow classic enough to appeal to the conservative, yet contemporary enough to get the attention of the young. So timeless, so classy.....just like the Audi A5, a design that he is particularly proud of.

VW & Audi are the only German brands that haven't gone all weird & quirky. Silva's talent was enormous and it is VW's loss without a doubt.

2015 is sure a forgettable year for Volkswagen. It's just one piece of bad news after another.

Some heads have to roll to show sincerity after being caught with their hands in the till. I am sure with his golden parachute plus (nearly certain) employment elsewhere.
