Default USA Car Sales Data. EDIT: New record with 17.47 million vehicles sold in 2015!

Came across this analysis of the US car sales data done by ManagementPunditz for October 2015

While it is not really relevant to us, the numbers are mind boggling(at least to me). The link has the detailed analysis. Sharing the summary and the Top Selling List.

Overall Sales Summary

The Top 16

Size: 42.7 KB

Points that really stand out.
  • Close to 1.5 million vehicles sold in October 2015. That is ~7 times the India sales.
  • Light Trucks constitute 57% of the sales. I had read somewhere that small cars are gaining ground in the US. False information apparently.
  • GM by themselves sold 260,000+ vehicles in October. This is greater than total India sales for October(~240,000). No wonder they don't care too much about India numbers. Ford and Toyota also close to overcoming the India October Sales.
  • Only 3 of the 16 models are currently sold in India. All three have insignificant volumes.
  • Electric Vehicle sales, although a significant number by itself, is a an insignificant percent of the overall sales.
  • In spite of DieselGate, VW still shows an increase in sales (Compared to a year back).

Was curious about the Trucks that takes the top spot. Adding a summary of the Ford F150 from the official site.

Have always been fascinated by US car sales numbers.
I especially keep track of luxury car brands. Here are there numbers in Oct

Merc: 28,952 (excluding vans)
Beemer: 29,439 (excluding Mini)
Lexus: 26,436
Audi: 17,700

C Class: 7283
3 series: 11012

E class: 4661
5 series: 2693

S Class: 1921
7 series: 618

Among the brands mentioned above, Lexus' truck sales are more than the car sales.

Holy moly! For 1/4th our population, they have sales of new vehicles 7 times us? What are they doing with all the old vehicles?

No wonder General Motors has such a laid back approach to our Indian market. They know they won't fetch any close to such high numbers even if they enjoy a Maruti like status in India. On the other hand, Ford is making significant advances to get a better hold of our market which IMO is highly appreciated. I am really surprised to see Fiat Chrysler taking the No.4 spot and selling as many as almost 2,00,000 copies in a month.

On the flip side, it seems like our market is a difficult nut to crack and only the Japs and Koreans seem to have gotten a winning formula in their hands at the moment.

I'm a big fan of the USA market and visit www.thetruthaboutcars.com and www.autonews.com at least once a week to keep myself updated.

The sheer size is mind-boggling. As an example, the Camry's USA sales of October are more than what the model has sold in India....since its launch in 2012!

What's interesting to me - as an Indian car enthusiast - is that Hyundai's Indian numbers aren't that far off from its USA performance. In fact, I wouldn't be surprised if Hyundai sells more cars in India in another 5 years. That said, the GMV (, how this term has gained popularity recently) of the USA market will be 3X that of India, even if the sales are the same.

Ford F150 = 65,000 copies

The last time I checked, USA had 700 - 800 cars / 1,000 citizens. In India, it's more like 20 - 30 / 1,000.

That's 3 years worth of their sales in India! Also, the pecking order is the exact opposite here.

I am quite surprised at the sale numbers of Fiat Chrysler. It is ahead of Honda & Nissan, but none of its models make it to the Top 16 popular cars.

Also checked their website and saw that their offerings are limited to 3 models
Chrysler 200
Chrysler 300
Chrysler Town & Country

Maybe I am referring to the wrong site. (http://www.chrysler.com/en/lineup/)

How is this possible to not have any model in the Top 16 popular cars and still be ahead of Honda & Nissan. Honda has 3 models in the top 16 and Nissan has 2. In fact, Chrysler is behind Toyota just by a small margin of 8.5k cars (small , Bottom 5 Indian manufacturers do not sell 8k in a month)

PS 1: Chrysler 300 so damn good looking. PLease DO NOT bring this to India - we do not buy gasoline in Gallons !
PS 2: For an Indian in the US, he wouldn't even need to look at the bhp & torque numbers. I do not think any Sedan would be less than 150 bhp.

The day we start getting LOW APR loans (like in the US), there will be an uptick in sales even here. For example, Chrysler USA offers @0.9% APR (literally free compared to us here) and BOA offers at as low as 2.24% versus the 11% which we pay here.

At $2000 down payment one can get Fiat 500X POP on lease of $149/Month for a 39 month lease period. At the end of lease buyout, BOA gives auto loan at 2.74% APR. Out here we end up paying almost ~35% over the loan amount over a 5 year period.

^^ If they are offering auto loans at 2.24%, what rate will they be paying on deposits? 1.5%?

Probably even lower:
http://www.mybanktracker.com/cd-rate...FREljgod9v8LpQ

I remember, while buying T-Jet, when I told my batch-mate in the US, he said he will offer loan @ 0% APR. I thanked him and declined politely, saying -- "The best way to lose a good friend is give him loan"

For the 12 months ended Sep 2015, US inflation rate was 0. It was at peak around the "Great Recession" years.

So, inflation+3% should be good enough a deal for banks when it comes to Prime Lending Rates (PLR). Not sure how much of a buffer Indian banks keep over inflation to cover their inefficiencies (NPA's etc)

Got Curious and tried to find some numbers from other Markets.

European Union (EU): (For September 2015)

In September 2015, the EU passenger car market showed another strong month (+9.8%), marking the 25th consecutive month of growth. Demand for new passenger cars was up in all major markets, driven by ongoing scrappage schemes and by the economic recovery of Southern Europe. Registrations in Spain (+22.5%), Italy (+17.2%), France (+9.1%),the UK (+8.6%) andGermany (+4.8%) increased when compared to September 2014. Across the region, new passenger car registrations totaled 1,356,868 units.

September 2015 Sales

Manufacturer Level Market Share

USA Car Sales Data. EDIT: New record with 17.47 million vehicles sold in 2015!-eusalesmanuf.jpg

Stand out points
  • September 2015 total sales of ~1.3 million units. Still lower than just the US Sales.
  • VAG dominates as expected. ~300,000 unit. Bigger than India combined sales. Even more dominant than GM US Sales.
  • Big Guns of India: Suzuki, Hyundai, Honda insignificant in EU. Suzuki sales at ~19,000 for whole of EU. That is less than the Alto/Dzire Sales in India.

Australia Car Sales: Looked up Australia expecting it to be another big market. Surprised to see it is much smaller than India. Just ~94,000 units for October 2015

Russia
Not a huge market. ~130,000 units for the Month of October. That is approx what Maruti sells in India

Awesome info! This gives perspective for folks who are trying to figure why a product is first launched outside and then makes its way to the rest of the world.

With regards to interest rates: I would prefer my fixed deposits gets me a 9% rate in india rather than going to hoops and taking a risk to get a probable 10% return on a mutual fund! Lower interest rates have a tonne of bad points to it. Just imagine if our infrastructure can bear the stress if interest was a 2% APR!

How i wish the F150 was sold in india!

Another interesting link to visit: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Automotive_industry

You get the overall sales country and manufacturer wise. The data is old though.

Here are the details about the monthly sales in the United Kingdom which are down 1% for October 2015.

Some interesting points to note:
  • Even though monthly sales were down 1%, registrations for Sports Car segment and Luxury Saloon segment increased 58% and 23.1% respectively.
  • Alternatively fueled vehicles get a 13.8% jump in October 2015 (VW emissions saga having a ripple effect maybe ?)
  • The state of Chevrolet is worse than in India with 0 sales in October 2015 and just 10 sales in the previous year. Even MG sells more than Chevy. Must be quite content with their US and Chinese markets.
  • The luxury arm of Japanese car makers (Lexus, Acura, Infiniti) which seem to do so well in the North American markets is almost non existent here.
