There is a huge difference between KMs of roads and the number of lanes/Km of road. In India, if you see, except the GQ, EW corridor and some NHs, most of the roads are just single lane. Whereas, if you see for China, the total length of expressways far far exceeds that of India as well as the US of A. I take to it that most expressways in China are 3 or 4 lanes minimum.

The more accurate measure would be car density measured in Car/KM/lane.

The Automotive Industry in China has been the largest in the world since 2008. Since 2009, annual production of automobiles in China exceeds that of the European Union or that of the United States and Japan combined!

Although we are estimated 15 years behind Chinese Automotive Market, India’s demographics and population has immense similarity with the neighbor. Currently, Chinese Car Market is over 7 times that of India (whereas population of China is only 1.1 times that of India)
Car sales in China increased 8.7% in 2015 to top 20 million units for the first time ever. Out of the Top 50 selling cars in China (for 2015), 13 brands are common to the Indian Market.

. China contributes to over 1/4th of the overall sales of the German biggies. The world’s no.1 premium car maker BMW stands second in the list in China. Audi ranks first in the Chinese rankings and over 32% of its sales comes from China! In 2015, for the first time ever in a calendar year, China was the most-important single-country market for Mercedes Benz.
