Talking Alfaholics GTA-R 270

Take a look at the pictures below and tell me whether have seen many cars more beautiful than the one below. That is the Alfaholics GTA-R 270. And pictures don't do justice to the handcrafted brilliance of each part on that glorious machine.

Who are they?
Alfaholics was started in 1970s by Richard Banks, who ran race teams and then restored and sold 105-series Alfas. When his sons Andrew and Max came along, they graduated from karting to building and racing their own Alfa.

The GTA-R 270 is based on the beautiful 1967 Alfa Romeo Giulia.

The 270 gets its name from Alfaholics' original target to achieve 270 bhp/tonne in a GTA-R. In order to achieve the target power to weight ratio, the main focus of the rebuild was weight saving - to shed 80 kg from a number of areas, including body, unsprung & rotational components. They however didn't want to compromise on the quality and detail of the interior, so the leather, alcantara and Wilton wool carpets was to remain.

Finally they went and smashed the target, the final spec has 290bhp/tonne. So much so that the little Alfa can fill the rear view mirror of a mighty Porsche 911 GT3 RS around the Nurburgring. Look up and you will find videos of that in YTube.

I came across this wonderful machine from evo' Track of the Year 2016. Do watch this video [From 21:15] to know more about this machine - its not just about form but function too. It is a big surprise how this wonderful art form has not got the coverage of the Singer 911 or the modern lightweight E-types. The 270 has been around for sometime now.

What is it underneath that beautifully crafted body shell?
The idea was to try and keep the essence of the Alfa being a 50 year old car in terms of the body shape so that it looks like an original GTA except for the big wheels but that was a necessity for better braking and suspension geometry. They didnt bolt on a bigger aftermarket wheel though, what they have done is recast the original from 14" to 15" and added a bit of width too. The rubber is Yoko Neova AD08 which you would have noted from that glorious rear profile.

They developed a Watt's linkage suspension and tubular wishbones to modify the geometry and make the cars quicker and quicker. Its got a LSD, which Alfaholics developed inhouse.

The bootlid, bonnet and doors are carbon fibre. The front wishbones are made from titanium as are the wheel buts and bolts. And everything that can be machined from billet aluminum has been made so.

The engine is an Alfa 75 based twin spark 2L unit with a 4 cylinder aluminium block which traces its roots back to the '60s but with a modern engine management system. The GTA-R 290 version has a 2.3L engine that has a long stroke crank and bigger bore.

The result is a kerb weight of 835kg- a reduction of 80kg over a normal GTA-R. And thats with all the leather, carpets and the lightweight leather covered roll cage.

The end result of all this is a car which costs about about GBP 160,000. Thats Ferrari money but when you think of it as an art form which you can use both on road and track, its starts to make sense. Alfaholics takes about 2000 hours to make one to this spec near their bespoke factory at Bristol.

The cars keep selling themselves before they are made. And which ever journo has driven it is smitten and that's when one understands the sinister undertone of the brand' name - Alfaholics. Just one taste of this glorious machine will make you addicted.

Yes these cars are truly gorgeous.
Right down to that 4 leaf clover!
I have a few scale models of this car in 1:43.

It looks a lot like the Lancia Fulvia HF Fanalone. Same design elements.

Delicious, those cars from that era! So full of panache and character!

Thanks very nice. Love these little cars! Of course, my own 1986 is very closely related to the GT series as they share the same 105 serie platform and even engines.

Alfaholics is also one of the most trusted and known suppliers of (classic) Alfa parts.

see http://www.alfaholics.com

Whenever I am in the UK, with my Spider, I might end up buying from them the odd bits and pieces. Very knowledgeable and customer friendly.

There is always some charm with the classics and if its an Alfa its like cherry on the cake. Somehow the Italians have always developed some of the best looking fast cars!

What a beautiful machine, from body, wheels and stance everything looks lovely. How do make the 4 cylinder car sound so much better, i am not sure if modern-enthusiasts will appreciate that gear lever.

Hope its under 4 meter

Short on cash to buy the gorgeous Alfaholics GTA-R?

Now, you got an opportunity to buy yourself a brand new Alfa which is every bit practical and sensuous.

Here is Henry Catchpole with the Giulia Quadrifoglio and the GTA-R 290 to find out what the fuss is all about!

Enjoy!
