2017 Mini Countryman unveiled; is the largest Mini yet
MINI has unveiled the 2017 Countryman SUV, ahead of its world premiere at the Los Angeles International Auto Show on November 16, 2016. This marks the introduction of the second-generation of the Countryman moniker. MINI claims that this is the largest model ever produced under its brand name.
On the design front, the 2017 Countryman still has many quintessential MINI design elements, including the front grille, headlamps and taillights. The new Countryman is 20 cm longer and 3 cm wider than its predecessor. It also gets 7.5 cm longer wheelbase, which helps in increasing the interior space on offer. At the rear, the Countryman comes with a conventional tailgate, while MINI is also offering a 'picnic bench', which is basically a flexible surface that folds out of the boot and provides seating for two people. The tailgate also gets touchless opening and closing functions.
The interiors get some major updates, though they retain the basic MINI elements. However, there are some major departures from MINI's traditional design language. These include the rectangular AC vents that replace the circular ones offered with other models. MINI has also enhanced the standard feature list of the Countryman, which now includes a panorama glass roof, keyless entry, 6.5-inch display with MINI Connected infotainment system, rear view camera, parking sensors, Bluetooth audio streaming, automatic headlights, rain sensing wipers, and sliding rear seats.
Engine options include two petrol and two diesels. Petrol line-up includes a 1.5-litre unit that churns out 134 BHP, 220 Nm and a 2.0-litre mill that develops 189 BHP, 280 Nm. Diesel duties are handled by a 2.0-litre four-cylinder engine, available in two states of tune: 148 BHP, 330 Nm and 188 BHP, 400 Nm. MINI's new ALL4 all-wheel drive system will be offered as an option with all four engines.
The 2017 MINI Countryman will also get a plug-in hybrid model, which will be launched at a later date. This will be the automaker's first ever plug-in hybrid. It will be available as the Countryman SE trim, which will be powered by the 1.5-litre petrol engine that works along with an 87 BHP motor. The engine will power the front wheels, while the electric motor will be sending power to the rear axles. Cumulatively, the 2017 Countryman Hybrid will be capable of developing 221 BHP and 385 Nm.
The new Countryman has already been spotted testing in India. Hence, an Indian launch won't likely be far away.

re: 2017 Mini Countryman unveiled; is the largest Mini yet
Like the new F56 Mini hatch, the new Countryman is a rather fussy design, with several design elements up front and 'round the back, fighting for center-stage. I prefer the outgoing car's cleaner lines to this.
Also, with the new hatch (in Cooper S guise) touching 50 lakhs OTR in some cities, I shudder to think what the price-tag of this one would be.
Minis were never the poster-boys of value to begin with, but a 60 lakh jacked-up hatchback will not find too many takers, considering the fact that established players like Mercedes have consolidated their positions with capable cars such as the GLA.
