Default Trump chides German carmakers for selling too many vehicles in the USA

This is interesting

Quote:
German carmakers found themselves at the receiving end of renewed attacks by President Donald Trump, who reportedly chided them for selling too many vehicles in the US, contributing to a lopsided German trade surplus that’s hurting the US economy.

"The Germans are bad, very bad," Trump told EU officials in a closed-door meeting, Der Spiegel reported, citing unidentified attendees. “Look at the millions of cars that they sell in the US Terrible. We’re going to stop that.”

That should make GM bad too, because they are lop-siding US trade surplus by not selling enough Chevrolets in India

If our prime minister said something like this. But of course, that would sound a death knell for us enthusiasts and leave us with Marutis and Hyundais only. Can't imagine our plight then.

On the other hand, USA has competent manufacturers to bank upon. Its just that the Germans have taken away a bit of charm and brought in there engineering practices, just like they did in India.

I think trump should ask manufacturers to concentrate on US as well as emerging markets. Chevrolet has just decided to quit India and Ford is struggling for foothold. But, he won't do it. He is Donald Trump after all.

That's amusing ! And next there with be a revelation by his so labelled "Fake News" of the German cars he had owned and also the ones he presently owns.

While at the Mercedes Benz factory in Germany in 2001, the German car maker's representative told us that the US is its largest market, saleswise.

Only if all that Trump says is taken seriously by anyone at all !

Now you can add China with US too.

By the way, which are American companies doing well?

Looks like he has no idea that the (Go Big or Go Home ) BMW X5 is entirely made in Spartunburg SC, which churns regular 4 to 5K sales per month!

Not sounding too political; but he is the biggest hypocrite in all aspects!

This is just politics (Trump's negotiation tactics) and has nothing to do with German carmakers.

That's how he has been dealing with friends and adversaries ever since he has become President. He basically wants Germany to import more from USA.

Ford. Their Focus is now officially the highest selling car in Europe. They just ousted the Golf from the top spot.

I don't think anything significant will come out of this.

Merkel isn't someone Trump will be able to bully.

This will most likely end up being a headline and a photo-op, similar to what happened with Carrier. Nothing major will change, he'll probably get manufacturing plants to increase some jobs/not cut jobs, at the extent of tax cuts. Which may actually not be in the best interest of American economy!

It wouldn't be exaggeration to say that of every ten cars in the US, there are four German, four Asian and the remaining two between European and American.

A big chunk of Trump's vote base came from the conservative midwest, including Detroit: home of the Big 3. Such a statement just shows his voters that is indeed after the "bad, bad guys".

Funny that Herr Donald Drumpf grandson of Frederiech Drumpf from Kallstadt Bavaria, is perceived to be having a problem with Germany, let me assure you that its nothing more than a publicity stunt to make him seem like he's all out pro-America.

Drumpf has interests in Germany too, with his firm TD Trump Deutscheland AG which is still making plans of building a Trump Tower in Frankfurt.

Yes there are loud noises being made about a tiff between Merkel and Drumpf, but its just politics for the common public, give the stake in Germany of Trump and of NY Times (Jared Kushner), its evident that they've been good friends of the nation for years.

Whats interesting is that BMW has a factory in Spartanburg, SC, Mercedes has a factory in Alabama, both German and supporting production of vehicles in the USA.

Nothing more than another flash and bang by Trump.

Merkel has reacted to the recent events.

"The times in which we could completely depend on others are on the way out. I've experienced that in the last few days," Merkel told a crowd at an election rally in Munich, southern Germany.

I would not be surprised if someone in the Trump family made a few million bucks "shorting" German auto stocks a day before he made this statement

Tesla - but only in terms of volume, it is bleeding cash still.
GM but only in China building crappy cars
Ford - only is US and moderate success in Europe

He forgot that upto 30% of Mercedes and BMW production comes from the US

Mercedes - C class for US, GLE and GLS are all built in the US

BMW - 3 Series for US, all X3, X4, X5 and X6 come from the US

If their sales are suppressed, the deep South, one of Trumps traditional vote banks lose economically, big time

Quite unlikely! Firstly, German models are not doing that great in our market, and secondly home-grown brands are not yet there in terms of finesse, FTD, or safety
