Default US orders 45,000 Scorpios for the first year!

Very interesting news about the forthcoming launch of Scorpio in USA.

Mahindra claims it has confirmed orders for as many as 45,000 Scorpios from 285 US dealers for the year 2008, much above the company's expectations.

Seems like Mahindra enjoys a good reputation among its US dealers who are exhibiting so much confidence in an unproven product from India, even if it's targetted at the bottom end of the market.

In India, Mahindra sold 40,000 Scorpios in 2006-07.

A truly amazing feat for an Indian company, I must say. Meeting customer expectations and sustaining this initial success will not be easy however and one hopes Mahindra would have done its homework well.

Best of luck to Mahindra!

Didn't read the report, did you?
Mahindra will spend $50 million to ensure Scorpio meets US safety standards.

Its the 2.2 180bhp version I think. Anything less will be too slow, considering you should be able to do 80mph with ease. This begets a top speed of atleast 110mph

The year is 2009 actually. Scorpio's US launch is expected in March 2009.

@ram: Tata's are already exporting to Europe the modified Safari's.Hence the foreign money is coming anyways. As far as M&M goes, they have to very careful in this initial order as this will form the base for their future orders and if this does well, we can expect a flurry of orders from US for our "Desi automakers".

Bringing in foreign money? Nothing new. Mahindra is already exporting tractors and are apparently doing good too.

What distinguishes Safari exports from this order is the size. Safari is exported in limited numbers whereas this export order exceeds Scorpio's annual sale in India.

Designing and supporting a volume product in a more mature market like US will hopefully enhance the design/manufacturing expertise of our desi UV maker. Hopefully, this will translate into better value for the customers in India.

And, I do wish M&M all the best!

I'm not sure I understood that - I presume you know the value of exports annually to the US already (apart from the automobile sector)?

Quote:
The company already has firm orders for 45,000 units of Scorpio for the first year
That to for a SUV from a company in the third world ....that is to be launched after 15 months .....Are we on the same line here?
