The fifth-generation 3 Series, code-named E90, will have its international launch in the second half of 2005.

It won't take the same design direction as the new 5 and 7 Series but as we reported before the car takes styling cues from the xActivity concept car on which the new X3 off-roader is also based.

BMW is also making sure that the 2005 3 Series will look more sporty by giving it a very aggressive styling treatment.

The reason why the German car manufacturer can take more radical design chances with the new 3 Series is because of the upcoming entry-level 1 Series.

This means that the 3 Series, which was always the company's biggest profit earner, won't have to battle alone for volume sales.

Thanks to the 1 Series BMW can also make the new 3 Series slightly bigger to increase the car's cabin space. So far the 3 Series was always being criticised for offering limited rear space but insiders are confidant that this will be a worry of the past with the next generation.

Typical BMW it will also feature a host of technological and futuristic innovations. It is expected that BMW's controversial iDrive system will also feature in a simplified form on the new model - it will be standard on the range toppers and offered as an option on other models.

On the engineering side it will feature a new rear-wheel-driven platform and the car's steering system will incorporate BMW's Active Steer system.

BMW is also developing new six-speed manual and six-speed automatic transmissions for the car. Like the current range SMG will also be optional.

BMW is sticking with four-cylinder units for the entry-level 3 Series models and as we also said before BMW will also introduce a 200kW+ 3.6-litre V8 model. The V8 3 Series will be a bridge between the 3-litre V6 and the high-powered M3/M4 models.

The coupé and cabriolet versions will be badged the 4 Series so the two-door M-powered model will get the M4 name tag.
