Default Toyota develops rear window air bag

Source: Economic Times

Toyota has developed a rear window air bag to updgrade protection for back-seat passengers, the company said on Tuesday.

In the event of a rear-end collision, the air bag is ejected from the roof lining above the rear window and spreads like a curtain to protect the heads of the rear passengers, Toyota Motor Corp said in a statement.

Toyota said the rear window curtain-shield air bag is the world's first.

The new safety gear will debut in the ``iQ'' compact four-seater vehicle, to be introduced later this year, Toyota said, adding that the air bag is expected to double the safety of rear passengers.

As part of an effort to attract buyers, Toyota has tried to make side air bags and shield air bags standard features, and has said it plans to increase efforts to develop safer vehicles and technologies that can ultimately eliminate traffic casualties.

Curtain airbags have been around for a while? What's new in this one?

Several Indian luxury cars already have these airbags.

Curtain airbags have mostly been used on the side windows. Guess this is the first time a company has used them for the rear window.

A couple of images.
These are to be offered in the upcoming IQ car/based car.

Toyota Develops World's First Rear Window Curtain Shield Airbag

Toyota is known for the production of high-safety vehicles that regularly score five stars at tests conducted by independent organisations like Euro NCAP. Not only do the larger vehicles benefit from its safety programmes, but smaller compact ones do too, like the Yaris for instance with its total of up to six airbags. Toyota will now add on this number by launching what is to be, as far as Toyota’s own research goes, the first ever rear window curtain airbag. It uses a normal Supplemental Restraint System (SRS) to protect rear passengers’ heads if and when benders happen to come from the backside.

The system will be used in the upcoming iQ ultra-compact four-seater city car and will help minimise the severity of head injuries for rear passengers, working together with the headrests.
