Thumbs up Accident-Proof Car?

Volvo to unveil world's 'first accident-proof car' next month

Car giant Volvo is set to unveil its first ever "accident-proof car", which will drive itself in traffic by using radar to control the distance.

The Swedish manufacturer will unveil Volvo S60 with automatic brakes at the next month's Detroit motor show. It will go on the market in 2010.

When the car believes that there is an imminent threat of a collision, a light flashes on a windscreen display in front of the driver at the same time along with an audible warning, the brakes are applied automatically.

What if you dont have the space to go ahead and somebody rear ends you ?
Its nice to see technological advancements, but not accident-proof car.

The word " Accident proof " is like unbreakable glass for drinking water. If it falls off tray or table, it wont break, but if it comes under a man's feet, it will break.

May be the word can be accident resistant, but not accident proof.

You can make a vehicle accident proof... But you can never make it idiot proof.

And a similar sort of technology is there in the S class as well.

Accidents are not caused by cars. They are caused by people or animals in our (India) case. They should make an accident-proof human if you ask me.

No way is this accident-proof. Plus, IIRC it is already there as an option in the S-Class as well as the upcoming gen of the 7 series.

What about those situations where it is wiser to steer away rather than slamming the brakes?

From what I remember from a read up on this kind of technology, the braking is gradual as you approach the object along with warning from the car. If the brakes is still not applied and the car reaches the minimum required distance for the car to brake safely without hitting the other object then it will automatically bring the car to a halt.

It is also supposed to tighten the seatbelts, get the brake oil flowing, cut the fuel, indicated readiness state to the airbags and other such sundry stuff !!! I believe all this is available in the S class already.

How much ever accident proof the vehicle is, it cannot be made idiot (driver) proof. Most of the accidents happen to the driver's misjudgement.

And what if the champion in the car behind dosen't apply his car's brakes? I hope Volvo invents an invisible forcefield at the rear of the car.

This will be non-ABS braking na - no need to steer away from a collision - the car will stop

You should watch an early Tarantino movie, "Death Proof". Quite interesting for car buffs.

Lets face it. All these systems are developed by car companies from developed countries - all of which have well-controlled and scientifically designed traffic conditions.

Suffice to say, most of these can no way work in countries like India - where even the significantly more complex/advanced human brain fuses in traffic conditions here.
