I thought the Genesis was Hyundai first attempt at making a Luxobarge. when did they come up with this Idea for a coupe ?

376BHP and a 4.6 V8 these Koreans are surely crazy.

Genesis is a sedan. There'a Genesis coupe too.

I was about to ask if this is also a car that is "yet to be launched" as BSM and AutoCar have made it a habit out here in India, but the following criteria make things clear:

"To be eligible for the top prize, a vehicle had to be all-new, completely redesigned or "substantially changed," and available to customers during calendar year 2008.
"

So a Korean car is the American car of the year...I guess that still wont change the attitude of the burra sahibs back home towards the korean marque. They will still continue to pour scorn on 'korean cars' even if it will take us a few light years to reach where they are today.

Should admit that Hyundai has some sleek designs. I simply love the exteriors of the i10. And the verna. And Sonata. And elantra. (But not the Accent). But the occasional lemon, and the bad press it gets scares me off.

This is what recession and bad times can do - push a downmarket brand up the value chain. Until the other day most Americans would rather be dead than be seen in a Korean car and now they declare a Korean car as the car of the year.
I don't know whether to feel happy for the Koreans or to feel sorry for the Americans.

Have you checked out the price at which this sells before you label it downmarket? Give credit where it is due, rather than being patronising.

Even if it sells for a million dollars Hyundai and Korea are two very downmarket names in America. You may call it downright American snobbery but that is (or now we should perhaps say "was") the reality of the situation.
I wasn't being judgemental about Hyundai or Korean quality. I was just commenting about their image in America. Japanese brands used to be something similar in the 70s. China/Taiwan right now is.
Slightly OT - Skoda in Europe has gone through a similar upward move in its image from being a shoddy Communist block auto maker till the other day.

hyundai was associated with the lower end of the auto spectrum in the US- however, they hired a hotshot US Auto marketing guy to head the Hyundai Motors North America section and that guy revamped the entire product range and image that Hyundai had.

Pretty amazing feat - you must give it to them! apparently The Ford Flex lost the Car of the Year award by only 9 votes - 189 to 180

Genesis has received very favourable reviews. It offers Lexus LS460 level of NVH refinement at a far lesser cost. The car is seen as a bargain luxury car, and is doing rather well in the market all said and done.

WSJ even reported that looking at Genesis revealed a big secret that the Lexus badge is worth an additional $15,000!!!. Hyundai has come a long way from its `Excel' days of the late-1980s, and perhaps in a decade or even less, it could give serious competition in all segments to Japanese and (if they are there) American cars. However, Hyundai's growth in US seems to have stalled in 2007 and 2008 for many reasons, only a few of which have got to do with the product quality.
