Default Gumball 3000 - 2k9 edition gets flagged off

Hi all,
The 2009 edition of the infamous Gumball 3000 was flagged off from LA on the 1st of May 2009. The famous rally will eventually end in Miami.

For those who dont know the Gumball is most known for 1) celebrity participation and 2) Overspeeding by the competitors on public roads and most importantly 3) The sweet, Sweet awesome machines!

This year among the cars running were some veyrons and a super rare jaguar Xj 220!
I spotted this dubai plated merc in Indian colors, any idea who this belongs to? I hope our middle east based brothers will be able to shed some light on this.

some links are enclosed below for your reading and visual pleasure!

I agree the stickers totally kill it.
Gumball is not illegal, the law frowns over it but since the organizers call it a "rally" and not a race not much can be done.

Infact last year the European leg was called off after one of the cars was involved in a fatal collision with a road car.

Wasnt the 08' Gumball 3000 cancelled??
Besides all the things pradster mentioned, its also famous for some insane speeding tickets and also a few exotic crashes. Guess a RR Phantom was totalled in the 07' Gumball 3000, not sure

Some real exotics in the run. Also many interesting paint jobs with decent sticker jobs.

Team Polizei was a very interesting team, which won one of the earlier runs in a highly modded and accessorized M5. Not sure if they are running this time.

The Green car is so messed up, is that a Charger?

The team polizei M5 driven by Alex Roy is indeed legendary! The car is kitted with an insane number of radar detectors and other evasive devices to help them do the run in the minimum time possible. I believe they did win the 2003 edition as well (not sure)
The driver Alex Roy was also behind the sensational attempt to break the record for the coast to coast drag. He attempted to do it in less than 32 hours. This was recorded and released as a documentary. He is also one of the writers for Jalopnik.com

I remember reading an account of his attempts long time ago, i will try to find it and post it here.

Yes, and it's accentuated with those horrible horrible white alloys. Not even sure if they deserve to be called alloys, they're more like hubcaps!

Gumball 3000 is seriously the best supercar event in the world. The turnout of cars is simply staggering! The best supercars travel around USA in 7 days! Lucky Americans!
I was just wondering that the SLR below has a paint job resembling the Indian flag. So does it mean it belongs to an Indian? btw it has a Dubai license plate.

OTOH, are those vinyls and decals really compulsory on those cars for the event? They spoil the look!

Love the livery on the Merc. It'll be a red letter day when an Indian-designed, Indian-built supercar does the one lap or gumball with all the other exotica out there.

Yes, it does belong to an Indian in his 20's from Dubai.
