Found: 1000s of car on a runway (UK) - Team-BHP

Have a look at this. Upper Hayford old RAF Airbase used as a stock yard.

Google Maps location

Zoom out and check how big an area these cars fill.
Zoom in and see some loaded into a car carrier.

Tried googling to find out which car maker is using this Airbase as a stock yard, but, wasnt successful.

Mods: I wanted to add this on to that 'recession hits car makers' thread, where we had seen similar pics. But wasnt able to locate it.

You sure there is no airline sponsored recession scheme of "Drive in with your dream wheels" and "Fly out on our wings" kinda of a thing in progress here.

I'm guessing if this isnt a stockyard for a particular Manufacturer, then it is the Second Hand Car's that have piled up from various exchange schemes over a period.

The 2nd hand market is huge in Britain and this could very much be the case. players in this field like Car Giant and Arnold Clark might have thought about renting out private air strips to cater to stock piles.The Airbase chaps might be making more on this than private jets being rested at their hangars.

absynthguzzler - your right the Upper Heyford airbase is used by various companies dealing with 2nd hand car. Car Giant and Arnold Cars usally have about 3000 Odd car in their database, so use this site to park. But its also used by some manufacturers, mainly european, to store their cars too.

I belive they are going to build a business park on that site soon.
