| Distinguished - BHPian ![]() | ID110: is a proper West German car. It's a 1959 Borgward P100 Airswing four door saloon. As the first German car to have air suspension, it inspired the Mercedes 220 which copied the air-suspension idea. Powered by a 2,238 cc six-cylinder engine that developed 100 bhp, it reflected the late fifties styling, tail-fins et al and could do 160 km/h. Here’s the cover of a German Hobby Magazine from 1960. (click for larger image) ![]() 2,547 instances of this brilliant automobile were built before the Borgward Group was killed. Carl Borgward’s big goof was to price his beautiful and technically excellent 1959 Lloyd Arabella, too low. Rushed into production with insufficient R&D, it had water-leaks and gearbox problems. Too many recalls damaged the company's finances. BMW had been in worse financial distress than Borgward. They almost got sold to Daimler-Benz AG. By threatening to lay off workers, BMW succesfully blackmailed the government into rescuing themselves. BMW (Herbert Quandt) plotted to grab Borgward's factory and actively lobbied with the government to get Borgward declared insolvent. They bribed the press to demand action, frightening prospective customers. The Bremen municipal corp. took over Borgward, banned Carl Borgward from visiting his own factory and appointed a municipal councillor Herbert Quandt, (owner of BMW) to manage it. Eventually BMW took over the Borgward factories and absorbed the key Borgward personnel. In 1963, the Bremen municipal corp. sold the machinery and rights to the Borgward P100 cars to a group of Mexican businessmen called Impulsora Mexicana Automotriz, Mexico. Carl F. W. Borgward died on 28th July, 1963, a broken man. Impulsora Mexicana started production in 1967 and built 2,267 P100s (called Borgward 230s in Mexico) before even that plant closed in 1970. Today, DaimlerChrysler operates Borgward's Sebaldsbrück factory in Bremen, Germany, to make Mercedes cars. Ram |

| Distinguished - BHPian ![]() | ID111: is a 1951 Chevrolet Fleetline Deluxe. Back in 1966, When I was a nine-year old kid, the District Commisioner of Police of Betul, MP, Mr. B.K. Sahu had one exactly like this. And it was black too. I had some great rides in it. ID112: is a 1950 Ford Tudor Custom Deluxe. It had a sidevalve flathead Ford V8 engine with two carburettors. The engine was whisper silent and developed 100 bhp! Back then, they had a 3-speed gearbox with overdrive. So 3rd gear had the 1:1 ratio. myselfarihant, you may like to post one picture at a time. Wouldn't it be more fun that way? Best regards Ram |

| Distinguished - BHPian ![]() | ID114: is a 1952 Fuldamobil N-2 "Silver Flea". A product of Elektromaschinenbau Fulda, Germany, the Fuldamobil N-2 had wooden bodywork, covered with a distinctive hammered aluminum sheeting, not unlike our sugarcane juice vendor's shacks. ![]() The body sat on a steel-tube chassis. Designed by freelance designer Norbert Stevenson, expert carpenters constructed the heavy, well-detailed bodywork with thick sliding glass windows. This labor-intensive work made the car costly. Powered by a Fichtel & Sachs single-cylinder two-stroke 360cc, 9.5 BHP engine with electric starter, the Fuldamobil N-2 had a Hurth 3-speed gearbox and could attain 80 km/h. Its transverse leaf spring in front and coilspring on the single rear wheel gave it a soft ride. It ran on 8-inch wheels with 4.00-8 bias-ply tires and had a unique chain-and-gear centrepoint steering system. Ram |
