| Distinguished - BHPian ![]() | That was easy. ID123: is a 1976 Chevrolet Vega. ![]() Its corporate cousin was the Pontiac Astre. These cars were made from 1971 to 1977. The Vega was Detroit's 2nd failed attempt in the subcompact car market to compete directly with the Volkswagen Beetle, Toyota Corolla and Datsun B-210. Vegas came with a 2300 cc 4-cylinder aluminum and cast-iron engine which put out 70 bhp with a single-barrel carburetor or 85 bhp with a two-barrel carb. The engines had a cast iron head on an aluminum-silicon cylinder block. The cylinder block had electrochemically etched bores. The engine repeatedly needed repairs. It would overheat due to poor cooling channel design. And ill-designed valve stem seals caused the engine to burn oil. Vega owners used to keep a crate of oil-cans in the dikky. They would add a quart of oil to the engine everytime they refueled. As if that weren't enough, the body would rust prematurely too. People called it "the car that began rusting on the showroom floor". Forbes Magazine included the Vega on its list of the worst cars of all time. To better position the Vega as an automobile that was inexpensive both to purchase and to maintain, Chevrolet published a do-it-yourself maintenance manual for owners. Notwithstanding all this, American bought 21,50,000 of these cars. Today in the USA, heads turn when one drives by. It conjures up another era, a time when cars were basic, uncomplicated and plain -- a time swiftly receding from our own beloved India. Last edited by Ram : 21st September 2006 at 09:45. |
