Meanwhile here's ID:297.

You're right Karl.
ID:297 is a 1953 Borgward Hansa 2400 "Sport Fließheck" fastback,
not the 1952 Borgward Hansa 2400 "Sport Stufenheck" notchback

Your namesake, Karl Borgward in 1952 wanted to move up to the luxury car segment and launched his Borgward Hansa 2400 in 1952.

This rear-wheel-drive had a 2,337 cc 6-cylinder 82 bhp @ 4500 rpm engine, and could do 150 km/h. It was made from 1952 - 1954

However the car got very bad press -- bad brakes, bad automatic transmission and poor visibility from the car. It sold badly. Only 1,032 sold between 1952 and 1955.

Well it's 24 hours since ID:296 was posted, so like a kid waiting for the cake, here's my answer.

ID:296 is a 1952 Hotchkiss Grégoire

This lovely aluminum car debuted at the 1947 Paris Salon.

Features
  • Air-cooled near-square-block engine
  • Light and strong one-piece cast aluminum cowl, windshield and body frame.
  • Front-wheel-drive.
  • Semaphore-style turn signals in the "C" pillars.
  • Suspended ball-shaped accelerator pedal.
  • Engine is ahead of the front wheels.
  • 2,190 cc 70 bhp double flat-twin engine, that drove a 4-speed gearbox. This gearbox had a two gear-lever control arrangement. A black lever for 1st, 2nd and 3rd, and a separate chrome lever for 4th gear.
  • Bendix "Tracta" type constant velocity joints in the front-wheel-drive system
  • four-wheel Bendix hydraulic brakes.
  • Capable of 170 km/h.
This car is one of the 30 cars at the Tampa Bay Auto Museum at Pinellas Park, Florida.

The museum says that a total of 253 Hotchkiss Grégoires were produced of which only one was imported by the Mack Corp. New York. That single one is the black car in the museum.

Imagine removing a car's wheel without removing the chrome hubcap! With the Hotchkiss Grégoire, this was possible.

Like the 1953 Borgward Hansa 2400, the Hotchkiss Gregoire was a commercial failure, despite coupé and cabriolet versions. Hotchkiss shut down passenger car production after 1954.

ID 296

Great stuff. I could identify it as a Hotchkiss, but nothing further! I remember Pranlal Bhogilal having one, but a much earlier model. Its perhaps the only survivor in the country.

If im not mistaken, Hotchkiss still manufactures ammunition and amoured vehicles. The logo has always borne 2 cannons.
