| Distinguished - BHPian ![]() | Congrats awini and V-16, ID:317 is an AMC Rebel Machine It debuted as a 1970 model in Oct. 1969, at the NHRA World Championship Drag Race Finals in Dallas, TX. AMC which had been America's economy car champion jumped into the muscle car league, with that debut. ![]() The AMC Rebel's Wikipedia entry describes the Rebel Machine, as a factory built drag racer in its standard red-white-blue paint scheme. As a dragster, it could complete the quarter mile in 14.4 sec reaching 159 km/h. The standard Rebel had AMC's small-block 390 cid (6,391 cc) V8 that breathed through a 4-barrel carburettor and put out 325 bhp @ 5000 rpm and 461 N-m @ 3200 rpm. The Rebel "Machine" had tweaked intake and exhaust manifolds that upped these numbers to 340 bhp @ 5100 rpm and 583 N-m @ 3600 rpm ![]() The mill was mated to a Borg-Warner T-10 four-speed automatic with a Hurst shifter (white ceramic gearknob). There was a large functional Electric Blue ram-air hood scoop. ![]() A vacuum-controlled actuator under the scoop would open its butterfly flap to admit cold air. A raised fairing on the left hand side of the scoop held a large tachometer visible through the windshield. ![]() Heavy-duty rear suspension with station wagon grade springs gave the car a tail-high look. The car could be ordered with two different differential ratios, 3.54:1 and 3.91:1. Power-assisted disc brakes. The 15-inch steel wheels were styled to look like mag wheels. They wore wide Goodyear white letter E60x15 tires. Bucket seats with a center armrest upholstered in red, white, and blue vinyl. ![]() The 1970 Rebel Machine was a limited edition. Only 2,326 were built. Ram
