Hyundai will exit the consumer vehicle market in Japan, after eight years.

While unexpected, the move is not surprising considering Hyundai has only sold 15,095 vehicles in Japan since 2001. For comparison, Volkswagen sold 61,996 vehicles in 2008 alone.

The company declined to cite a reason for the lackluster sales, but Japan's automotive market is relatively small and Hyundai never overcame the stereotype of making "cheap Korean cars."

According to spokesman Oles Gadacz, "If you're not a Gucci or a BMW, there are very few who prosper there (in Japan)," He added, "Mass-market players have it very tough."

Despite exiting the consumer market, Hyundai will continue to sell commercial vehicles in the country. However, that business hasn't been terribly successful either as Hyundai has only managed to sell 43 Universe buses since 2006.

Koreans hate Japanese and Japanese look down on Koreans. The Korean students in my college do not buy any Japanese cars and they don't even like dating Japanese girls. I guess its cultural differences like these that contribute to Hyundai not selling well in Japan.

IMO the japanese market is saturated .If you see Auto companies sales are being down YOY. Also the brand toyota or honda is so big that the Japanese people may not look beyond them. So Hyundai might have felt no business sense staying in Japan Markets

Well in the tokyo auto show this yeah there were only 2 foreign car & bike manufacturers, one was harley forgot the other one, compare to 2007 there were 24 foreign manufacturers in the show. Finally the international car manufacturers are backing out from the jap market which only are buying jap cars, so makes sense if you ask me, hyundai did the right thing..

Worse than Fiat in India..... :D

So, the Japanese are very cooperative in joining together to boycott a company like Hyundai selling thier brand cars in that country?

Fact
Japanese quality is undeniably excellent. They will however buy Gucci and other premium brands.

Fact
Koreans rank Japanese product higher than Korean.

Fact
Its however true that Koreans dislike the Japanese.

Fact
Hyundai is Number Two in most SE Asian countries: Toyota is followed by Hyundai in Singapore auto marketshare, for example. Value for money prevails over brand consciousness and quality! ;)
