Dec. 30 (Bloomberg) -- Volkswagen AG’s Audi luxury division is recalling Q5 sport-utility vehicles in the U.S. as an interior-trim component may come loose when side head-protection air bags deploy, the U.S.’s main vehicle regulator said.
The recall, affecting 6,054 Q5s built between Nov. 25, 2008 and June 4, 2009, will involve replacing any faulty trim clips on the vehicle’s left and right side pillars, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration said in a statement. Incorrectly manufactured clips pose a risk of coming loose and injuring vehicle occupants in the event of a crash that triggers the side air bags, the NHTSA said.
U.S. recalls related to air bags in the past year include 440,000 Honda Motor Co. Accords, Civics and Acura TLs to repair the bags’ inflation systems in models built from 2001 to 2003. Ingolstadt, Germany-based Audi asked owners of 36,000 A8 sedans worldwide in 2006 to bring in the cars to fix driver’s-side air bags because of an inflation fault.
An Audi spokesman couldn’t immediately be reached for comment.

We have both the Q7 and the Q5 on sale here. Audi will certainly recall the cars if they are affected. The rules may not require it but they take issues like this seriously. Even cars that are much cheaper are recalled if there is any trouble.

Post Honda recalls Fit/Jazz cars over window fault

I happened to see this article today.

TOKYO/JOHANNESBURG, Jan 29 (Reuters) - Honda Motor Co recalled 646,000 of its Fit/Jazz and City automobiles globally over a faulty window switch after a child died when fire broke out in a car last year.

The recall includes 140,000 vehicles in the United States and covers the models sold in North America, South America, Europe, South Africa and Asia, but not Japan, a spokeswoman said.

The Fit is Honda's best-selling model in Japan. Earlier this week, Toyota Motor Corp's announced it would extend to Europe and China a recall of millions of vehicles due to faulty accelerator pedals and floor mats.
Honda said the recall was to fix a defective master switch, which could cause water to enter the power window switch and in some cases cause a fire.

There were three reported cases of fires due to the defect, two in the United States and one in South Africa, the spokeswoman said.
A spokesman for Honda in Britain said the company had recalled all 2002-2008 year model Jazz units in South Africa and will recall 172,000 units in Britain after a fire broke out in one last year, killing a toddler.

Honda said on its website www.honda.co.za it would "inspect and modify driver door power-window switches that may, in some cases, short circuit as a result of water intrusion".

Vanilla Nurse was killed on her second birthday in Cape Town in September last year when the car she was sleeping in caught fire.

"There has been a recall to do with a window switch and 172,000 cars will be affected by the recall in the UK," a Honda UK spokesman told Reuters on Friday.

"The recall will start towards the end of February. Now we will start talking to customers and dealers as to how we set up that recall."

Honda UK said that water was entering the drivers' window of its Jazz model and reaching a master power switch, potentially causing the switch to over heat and "potentially cause fire".

"At the recall a waterproof skirt will be fitted to the window to avoid any damage," the spokesman added.

Honda's Jazz was its best-selling brand in December, selling 352 units during the month.

Good that Honda included India in the recall list. Shows that they highly value Indian operations and don't have chalta hai attitude.

Never seen any such recall from Maruti Suzuki, though - either they think all their cars are perfect or they just don't care

Update on HSCI (Honda Siel Cars India). News published in the Hindu.
<http://beta.thehindu.com/business/article97456.ece>

Honda Siel Cars India, on Saturday, announced that it would call back 8532 units of the first generation City, manufactured in 2007, for a preventive part replacement of the power window switch.

HSCI is proactively replacing the part in these vehicles related to the potential problem of smoke coming out from the power window switch if water enters the driver window when window is left open during heavy rain, or is exposed to any other liquid due to spillage.

The replacement would be carried out free of cost and the company will communicate directly with the owners of the cars which are covered under this part replacement, according to a company release.

HSCI is carrying out the part replacement as part of a global exercise by Honda Motor Company to ensure stringent quality standards for its products.

The third generation City , currently sold in India , is not affected and does not require any part replacement, the release says.

HSCI further clarifies that the global recall does not impact the Honda Jazz sold in India . The recall announced by Honda applies to first generation Jazz and does not apply to the second generation Honda Jazz, which has been sold in India since June 2009.

Man, that is awful. Whats going on in the world market? My feeling is that 'Quality Compromise' has become the order of the day, to cut-throat, market-lead and make numbers. This trend doesn't seem healthy, at all.
