Meh, there was another case of a designer " A. R. Mani" of desi origins who had the domain armani.com booked and in use. In 2001 Armani(r) sued him and apparently he lost the battle since domain armani.com is back in the companys hand

But isn't it a little far fetched for a cyber squatter to fight in the courts for 10 years for justice?

The apt phrase to sum it up can be called as corporate terrorism. The auto maker is big and is unnecessarily suing a small firm using its owner's name since decades.
Datsun was their earlier brand name and the Nissan badge was used for trucks and mini trucks (like the 1.5 tonner our army had) that they made.
So it is an illogical court battle. Live and Let Live should be the motto.

Exactly. Besides, it is his last name for many generations, he has documents to prove it. Registering his own last name can't be considered cyber-squatting.

Similarly, you can see skoda.com, I heard that they sued the owner and lost the case.

Yes Mr.Bean! You are right! But was really shocked with the attitude with these giants like Nissan & Skoda.

They still have decent domain names with them, nissan-global.com, nissan.co.jp, skoda-auto.com. So why worry?

Similar story is there regarding altavista.com and Jack marshall.

Incidentally this also happened in '94 i guess. He was paid about 3 million back then by compaq.

That is some story GTO. And that guy has some ill-fate.

I've noticed Bentley doesn't have a domain of their name. Similarly, Bentley.com is also owned by a Solutions firm. Any clue ?

We can safely presume that either one of the parties was unreasonable. Either Nissan in what $$$ they offered, or Mr. Nissan in what he was expecting.

I would actually agree with microsoft here. If his name was Mike Rowe, why the "soft"? I'm sure he would still have his domain today if it read mikerowe.com

Aw shucks, Skoda too? On a lighter note, Skoda seems to have little understanding of the online domain, wot?

Anand Ramnath Mani did not loose the battle. Here is the WIPO decision on the same case
WIPO Domain Name Decision: D2001-0537

I guess Armani would have made an out of court settlement with Mr A R Mani. I am sure the guy made a fortune.

This is the case with many big players, there are lots of old organizations with the same name. Just because they are famous, they think the court will rule in their favor. and every time they fail.

I think Pioneer, the consumer electronics company also had some issues with another company named Pioneer.

The electronics company then got Pioneer USA - Home, while the other company uses Home | Pioneer Hi-Bred International, Inc..

Don't know if there was any court action in this case.

www. vw.com was owned by a company called Virtual Works. I think they lost the case to Volkswagen.
bajaj.com is owned by some Bajaj family and not Bajaj Auto.
