Default Bet you don't know the story behind nissan.com

You'd think nissan.com led to Nissan's global website (like toyota.com or honda.com). Right? WRONG!

Nissan.com is actually owned by a gentleman whose last name happens to be Nissan. He registered the domain back in '94 for his computer business. Nissan (the car co) would have none of it and has continually dragged him to court.

If Nissan wanted the domain so badly, they could have approached him with an irresistible $$$ offer, instead of sending a legal notice. Some people...when they get into a fight, no matter how big the opposition, they won't let go.

Interesting reads on the battle over this domain name:

Never expected a corporate giant to do something of this sort.

As simple as it may seem, I find it hard to believe that Nissan motors didn't make an offer to the said gentleman for the domain name. However since the courts have ruled in favor of Mr. Nissan, I think it was plainly stupid of Nissan motors to go the legal way and not sort this out amicably.

This reminds me of an amusing story where a guy called Mike Rowe made a website called = mikerowesoft.com

Nissan is out of cash even to buy a domain, hence sued the poor guy

Similar story is behind whitehouse.com also! This time US Federal Government was the other party as the intend of the original site was not good . Now the domain seems to be on sale with no takers...

Yup. I was thinking of exactly the same thing! Unfortunately, if I remember correctly, Mike Rowe lost the case.

Another similar story is how TATA went to court against an online travel portal which was named "OkTataByebye.com"

The guy Uzi Nissan does not have a computer business I think. There is no way of buying computers online but he has links to donate online and buy bumper stickers online. How nice!

They are cybersquatting. And the computer business is just a cover-up.

I'm sure if he offered nissan.com it to Nissan for a sum of money, they would have paid up. He might have demanded an unreasonable amount, that's the problem, me thinks.

Hope the just party wins!

Whoa! This is huge controversial corporate mess going undetected for more than a decade! I am also thinking to refrain from buying nissan motors products now. BAD for such a motor giant to pursue such action on a tiny company. BAD BAD BAD!

I am not sure how this will affect the car buying decision, if one finds a reason in every company no one can buy a car in his/her lifetime

I'm all for the Davids of this world, but I have to agree with Proxima here. CyberSquatting is a plague, a loop-hole that a lot of people successfully exploited to make a lot of money during the initial years of the Internet - the ACPA was passed for a reason.

P.S. - Didn't this happen with the FIAT India website as well ?

Sorry to say GTO, but I had read about this story earlier ..

Similarly, you can see skoda.com, I heard that they sued the owner and lost the case.
