ya he did design the pontiac gto and the 'designing' of the delorean was done by Italdesign, but the fact stays that delorean is the master mind of john z delorean, who wanted to make a really good sports car at a cheaper cost using state of the art material.

John DeLorean was a marketing manager at GM who quit his job to make sports cars. The DeLorean technically had nothing to show.

And what about DSG (Direct Shift Gearbox) from VW? I thinks it's the best transmission you can get on any road car today.

The shifts on this system sound as quick as on an F1 car. And with 2 clutches, it's effective as well.

Cylinder management was used on the previous generation of the S-class. On the top-of-the-line S 600 V12, one bank of 6 cylinders would shut off during daily driving conditions.

The list of breakthroughs is tough, but I guess I'd vote for the DSG innovation.

any idea when diesel as a fuel was started to be used extensively ?

Most radical development in the last 5 years has to be hybrid production cars.
