What next? Ferrari/Redbull go for a 3 day/1000KM test and then take the Young Driver test ban

FIA being dumb and spineless!

I don't personally see why people would be surprised by this minor sanction. FIA clearly screwed up. If Mercedes was to be sanctioned more seriously it would make the FIA look incredibly stupid, no matter how much they deny giving permission they simply did, Any heavier a penalty would appear unjust to most as a team having gotten permission from Whiting and then asked for confirmation with FIA legal department on the same and then being penalised heavily for it. I do not think FIA is being stupid or cowardly for this passed motion but rather trying to save face, They have been stupid in general over the past weeks though.
I find this so called 'Tribunal' to simply be an extension of the FIA. I'm almost certain they have say in the...final say despite the advertised 'Independent Panel'.

As for the traction control on the RB I think if it's similar to Mercedes own FRIC(Front and Rear Inter-Connected), which circumvents the rules, that they debuted for 2013 RBR should be fine.

The judges say Mercedes gained an unfair advantage. With the test being secret and no information on what was tested by Mercedes and that news about making their drivers wear black helmets itself points to the proportion of gains Mercedes was expecting. May be everyone is glad its not a scarlet car that gained this advantage!

Wow, so Mercedes gets away with IMHO, a very minor reprimand. Ah well, can't say that I didn't see it coming.

How is this a punishment? and I don't see which team would not like to trade YDT for 1000 kms of testing with current drivers. What a farce!!

Now I would love to see current drivers being disguised as "young drivers" for this YDT.

The penalty is not fair at all!

Ross Brawn is a master at this. You give him gap to slip in a Scoot, he will get through in an Actros.

I feel sorry for the two Young Drivers slated for the Merc test though.

Light reprimand for Mercedes after all the ruckus.

Now for some conspiracy theory:
Pending the outcome of this tribunal, had Mercedes downplayed the gain of the testing done?
Nico and Lewis sitting pretty on how to get themselves around the circuit faster, but holding back to portray that the gain wasn't that much.

Now that the verdict is out and the issue is shelved,
Will we see LH on the top step of the podium at the British GP?
A return to grandeur of sorts

Ha!
Mercedes may be new as a factory team, but Ross brawn is an old player.
There're a few people that the FIA/bernie will not touch.
You've either got to have clout, or deep pockets, or be an established performer, or you have to be Ferrari.
The last one supersedes all the rest.

If they had banned Mercedes, the sport would have received tremendous loss, by way of pathetically boring RBR steamrolls. And the offence was not that great to warrant anything more serious.

.
The common factors in the days when Ferrari used to get away with things and the Mercedes issue of today were Jean Todt and Ross Brawn.

One is in the FIA and the other is heading Mercedes now.

What else can we expect.

They say that enquiries were made as to the legality of using 2013 cars but there was no follow up on the part of Mercedes.
What about the FIA's part? Why didn't they deny permission outright when the enquiry was made?

Charlie Whiting was supposedly present during the test days and this means unofficial consent.

Punishing Mercedes more harshly would be virtually impossible without shooting FIA in the foot in the process.

Your reasoning behind Mercedes light punishment in additional to FIAs own botch is sound.
Moving ahead I wonder how much exactly will the rest of the top runners benefit from the exclusion of Mercedes in the YDT given that only rookies/amatuers will be allowed to drive and not current drivers as had mercedes.

The Tribunal, having found that Merc gained an unfair advantage, should've imposed a stricter penalty. Now the penalty seems too lenient for the "crime". YDT v/s 1000km tire test with race drivers?

If FIA does not want to anger Mercedes and risk losing a manufacturer from the sport, they should convert the YDT to an official session for the other teams with race drivers. Or at least let the teams run the race drivers on one day of the YDT.

I dont know if it works like that, but I can see its an impact of Bernie that has saved Mercedes. Whatever Mercedes did with the testing could have easily got them excluded from the championship this year. Mercedes will start showing what they have gained from Silverstone GP as the case is closed & out with all the other teams bringing big upgrades!

I particularly liked this part

"And what if this whole incident had taken place after the young driver test, what would have been the penalty then? Would they have been forbidden from holding an end of year dinner?"

and this...

"The way things are going in Formula 1 at the moment is becoming boring: you make a mistake, you race with an illegal component, but then you are told to just change it for the next race and we've seen what we've seen..." it said.

A Ferrari spokesman: "How can a reprimand be enough to punish a team that struggled at the Spanish Grand Prix, tested and then won in Monaco? No one knew about the test, yet the tribunal does not seem to have investigated why not and what exactly went on. No wonder the teams are angry. They have had enough of the FIA. The threats might be empty at the moment but the fact that these conversations are taking place shows that no one is happy with [Jean] Todt or the FIA. The crunch is coming and everyone wonders when and how. Maybe this is the time."
