A couple of videos:

Mercedes:

Ferrari:

The Ferrari sounds a lot more 'meaty' IMO. Could just be the different camera/microphones..

Some teams decided to show their support for F1 Legend Michael Schumacher through their F1 cars this year.

A very kind gesture on their part!

Hamilton's crash was caught on tape.

The turbos sound distinct, but they don't scream like the V10's or V8's. I must say this reduces the unique thrill aspect that F1 gives .

Toto Wolff was saying that the engines are currently running only till 10000 RPM. They haven't turned the wick up and run them till 15k, so I'll hold complete judgement till then.

Here's the Caterham CT05!!
Weirdest nose so far.

Sorry to be a bit pedantic, but Bernie Ecclestone doesn't actually make the rules of the sport.

The rules of F1 are made and governed by the FIA. Bernie was actually against moving over to the turbo V6s, and staying with the V8s.

Also, the FIA makes rules to make the sport safer and more relevant to the current conditions of the world. The teams are the people who interpreted the rule in a certain way and made the cars look like they do. All the teams could have made the cars look like the Mercedes does, but they thought differently, hoping that there is some kind of performance gain if they make the car like they have.

These noses look like Spongebob, don't they?
Did these never step back and take a look at what was coming into being?

They probably did, but I guess the solution is aerodynamically efficient.
I don't think any of the teams are going for looks. They just build what they think will work best within the rules. After all, it is a sport, they want to win and if the ugliest possible car is the fastest, they're going to build it.

The new Merc looks lovely. That nose, the front wing and the side profile looks great. Boys from Brackley, Well done! And the car looked good on track too. I am sure Lewis would have completed many more laps and well clear of the Ferrari had that front wing not failed.

And maybe its not a coincidence that 2 teams which make their own engines had a better outing on day 1. Merc was better prepared due to the filming day run at Silverstone last week.

The RB 10 too looks good from an aesthetic point of view. But I really can't make out whats the purpose of that goatee up front on the nose. The worst noses are on the Force India and Caterham. Hideous! Maybe the aero gains are worth it. Only time will tell.

Here is another pic of the best car in 2014. Hope they are not at a disadvantage aerodynamically due to this beautiful nose.

Ferrari, Mercedes and Red Bull doesn't have that ugly nose. So I guess they wouldn't be at a disadvantage since their main rivals would also not gain anything from it

True, the new noses look awful !

SpongeBob ? You are being too kind - this is what I remembered when I first saw the new "noses" :

The 2014 F1 Season-tintinflight714.png

At least Red-Bull have used paint to camouflage how the nose on their car really looks, some other teams appear to have not tried at all

Watching the races in HD is going to pretty painful...

While Bernie does have(indirectly) say over new rules that are put in place, the interpretation and implementation of them comes down solely on the team and designer.

As for the noise I think comparisons being made on the noise being produced by this V6 to older 8/10s & especially those who feel the V8s sounded as good as the older V10s are incorrect. The V10s were screamers. V8s tried.
I for one look forward to this very different new sound. Also, It's interesting the comment made above that these are only being revved to 10k and not 15k. I did not know that, Wonder what 15k will sound like on the straight : 0

Arrow Boullier named McLaren's racing director

Boullier named McLaren's racing director

McLaren has confirmed ex-Lotus team principal Eric Boullier will join its team as racing director on February 3.

Boullier will report to a new but yet-to-be-appointed CEO, who will then report directly to Ron Dennis at the top of the management structure. Ex-McLaren team principal and CEO Martin Whitmarsh was not mentioned and COO Jonathan Neale will take over the role of CEO in the interim.

Well, although the rev limit is 15k, reports indicate that peak power will be available from 10k, and that races will also be run around 10k (for fuel reasons, as well as the fact that the turbo makes power accessible from that point onwards). But yeah, I'm curious to hear their sound at WOT

Deeply concerned with the lack of sponsors at Willams.. Barely any strikers on the car. They do have some PDVSA exit money, but where is the rest of their budget coming from. McLaren are yet to announce their title sponsor. Sauber don't have a title sponsor as well. Dangerous times in F1 this.
