Post 2014 Austrian GP - Red Bull Ring - Race Thread

The race circuit was founded as Österreichring and hosted the Austrian GP for 18 consecutive years, from 1970 to 1987. It was later shortened, rebuilt and renamed the A1-Ring, it hosted the GP again from 1997 to 2003. When Formula One outgrew the circuit, a plan was drawn up to extend the layout.

Circuit Layout

Parts of the circuit, including the pits and main grandstand, were demolished, but construction work was stopped and the circuit remained unusable for several years before it was purchased by Red Bull's Dietrich Mateschitz and rebuilt. Renamed the Red Bull Ring the track was reopened on 15 May 2011 and subsequently hosted a round of the 2011 DTM season and a round of the 2011 F2 championship. F1 will return to the circuit this week.

Daniel and Seb takes us through the Red Bull circuit in this beautiful video.

This is a new race, albeit on a track based on the old A1 Ring, which was used until 2003. It is one of the shortest laps of the year time-wise at around 68 seconds. The track features four flat out stretches and just nine corners.

It looks quite bumpy for this A5 at DTM, 2012.

The track puts quite low energy into the tyres, so Pirelli is bringing the same soft and supersoft tyres it used in Monaco and Montreal. Getting the front tyres to work will be the challenge for the teams. Two stops are projected, with one stint on supersofts and two longer stints on softs. As it is a new track, teams will do plenty of running in practice to understand the key strategy considerations.

The track is at an altitude of 700m above sea level. With normally aspirated engines this would lead to a 7% power loss, but with turbo engines this is not an issue. However the turbo is more stressed as it spins at a higher rate at altitude to compensate for the lower atmospheric pressure. This will put the turbos on the limit.

68 seconds, sounds like Indi!

I am so looking forward to a resurgence from the Mercedes and the Mclaren.
Firing my shots again for a Mcl 3rd place(Eventually will hit sometime! Karthikeyan managed a top 5 once too).
Hammy buay and Rosberg on 1 & 2, Bitte?

Austria, what a track.
It's nice to see the A1 ring(Red Bull ring) in the calender.

I am sure it's going to be a cracker of a race in Austria. Looking forward for the weekend entertainment.

I guess we will see the Mercedes again top the sheets with Lewis and Nico fighting each other but I am interested in seeing if Mercedes has resolved their problems since again this is a fast speed track and one which will test the braking and energy recover unit. It was here the Mercedes had a problem on both cars last time so let's wait and watch.

Will be exciting and also i would think that it's time ferrari comes to contention.

Vettel may outpip Ricardo here is what I feel but then Ricardo has been a surprise and an handfull for Vettel!

Time Button and Kimi to show their pace as well. Kimi knows this circuit well and has put some incredible lap here earlier!

What a lovely track this is.

Very interesting P1/2. With engine power again being a key advantage, with an abundance of straights, yet traction out of the corners is also important given the lack of a long straight. This is aiding Ferrari and putting them in better stead to fight Red Bull and Williams this weekend.

Another point to note is that this is the first time in many years that engine will not see a drop in power here due the high altitude. Kudos again to Turbos.

Excellent thread.

Winners at A1 Ring below.
In 2002, Ferrari controversially told Barrichello to let Schumacher pass him at finish line.

Hoping to see Hamilton cover up lost ground.
Mclaren and Ferrari should improve now. Rest of the field looks much stronger than these two teams. Mercedes are still in a league of their own.

Qualifying 2 just finished. Vettle is locked at P13. Roseburg and Hamilton at P1 and P2.

Let's see what Qualifying 3 brings in.

OMG, no one expected this coming!!. William locking up the front row since Germany 2003 and first pole for Massa after Brazil 2008 and also the first one since his accident.

It will be a really interesting race for tomorrow, Williams heating up the tyre faster could possibly screw the race for them.

Hamilton locking up the rear tyres, highly unlikely. Looks like he got some issues, lets wait for what he has to say afterwards.

Alonso 4th, once again showing what he has got.

Vettel !! P13?? out qualified by Ricciardo as well as Danial in Toro roso. What is going on?

I have not watched either of the Practice sessions or Qualy.
Could someone please tell me if the Mercedes is quicker on race pace than Williams O___O?

Awesome job by Williams to lock out the front row. Kudos to the rookies MAG and KVY in thrashing their experienced team-mates. This is a track where no one really had prior experience and the rookies have shown that they are as good as the rest of the grid on level footing. ALO, RAI, BUT and MAS have raced here in 2003 but that was V10 era and F1 dynamics has changed a lot since then. So there isn't much of a prior experience for anyone.

Red Bull's home GP seems to be their biggest struggle so far with neither cars able to match the pace of the Mercedes engines or even the Ferrari. If the issue is with getting temperature into the tyres, they might be able to pull off a surprise pit-strategy.

Kimi is lucky to start on P8, since he didn't have the pace to get to even P9 in Q3 had others put it proper laps. However, his race pace has been reasonably good throughout the season and he might eventually finish around P6-P8, considering the likes of HAM starts behind him and might overtake him soon.

It would be an interesting race tomorrow since the track is very small and encountering back-markers would happen very quickly. It would be a torture test for Hamilton tomorrow and he would be happy that Rosberg has 2 Williams ahead to pass by the time he comes up through the grid. If Williams can manage to hold Rosberg behind them for a while, we are set to have a strong battle with Hamilton. Massa has done very well at the starts this season and would likely get to the first corner first.

Super exciting qualifying. Brilliant surprise from the Williams guys pulling out a 1-2.

If only Hamilton had not made that mistake on his first attempt, he would surely have been on pole. On the second run, the car just snapped under brakes which seems very weird, could be some brake problem of some sort.

I think we're in for an exciting race tomorrow, with Hamilton so far down, but with a much faster car, so should be able to fight his way through.

Horrible qualifying for Mercedes especially Hamilton. Have they become complacent or may be over confident?
Well done Williams.
It would be interesting race tomorrow.

Great Quali! The Mercedes drivers want to beat each other more than the opposition!
Williams really turned it on.. good to see them back at the front.
The nightmare continues for Kimi..

Red Bull have dropped some serious pace..doesnt seem to be all engine.

Makes for an interesting race for sure.. Lewis will be on the charge.
