  • Lewis Hamilton set the fastest time on the soft tyre, faster than the time he set earlier on the ultra-soft. While part of this might be track evolution, it is still interesting behaviour. He was also the only one to set a time under 103 seconds.
  • Nico Rosberg trailed Hamilton by nearly four-tenths, and didn't improve his ultra-soft time on the softs.
  • Yas Marina is reputed to be a power track, particularly with the two long straights. However, the Red Bull pair of Max Verstappen and Daniel Ricciardo put their cars just behind the Silver Arrows, and ahead of the Ferraris. One can only hope that Ferrari are on a different run plan, otherwise being six-tenths behind Red Bull does not bode well for them.
  • Similarly, Force India's Sergio Pérez placed his car comfortably ahead of both Williams cars and ended up splitting the Ferraris, on a track that should have rewarded the slippery Williams on the straights.
  • Daniil Kvyat ended his FP1 due to a puncture on his Toro Rosso. Toro Rosso's and punctures have been a common feature in FP sessions, which indicates they are probably pushing the limits on bodywork being close to the tyres.
  • Romain Grosjean had to cut short his FP1 session after a spin, reportedly caused by brake-by-wire issues. For a problem that has been recurring through the season, Haas need to address this before 2017.
  • Jenson Button had to cut short his FP1 session by about half an hour, due to a problem with the hybrid power system.
  • Force India's development driver Alfonso Celis (aka "the Fonz") ran in place of the departing Hülkenberg, and Manor's Jordan King did likewise instead of Ocon who moves to Hülkenberg's race seat at Force India next year. Charles Leclerc was meant to drive instead of Esteban Gutiérrez for Haas in FP1, but had opted out due to the GP3 session that follows after FP1.
  • FP2 will be more interesting and relevant as it occurs as the same time as qualifying on Saturday and race start on Sunday. Track temperatures will be more relevant towards car setup, and the track will be more rubbered in after FP1 and the GP3 qualifying session.

  • Lewis Hamilton once again topped the timesheets, but Nico Rosberg closed the gap to just eight-hundredths of a second. The Mercedes silver arrows continue to dominate on single lap pace, both lapping under 101 seconds.
  • Sebastian Vettel put his Ferrari ahead of the Red Bull duo of Max Verstappen and Daniel Ricciardo, with Kimi Räikkönen trailing them.
  • Unfortunately, Vettel was hit with a gearbox failure near the end of FP2. This is most likely a Friday unit, so it shouldn't cause a penalty.
  • In the long-run race simulations, the Red Bull cars showed impressive pace, keeping up with or even exceeding the Mercedes cars. That holds a lot of promise for the race, although front-right tyre wear was a concern for some drivers.
  • The ultra-soft effect? Lap times in FP2 were a second quicker than any FP session here in 2015.
  • The Force India cars and Williams round out the top 10 with little to differentiate them.
  • After a poor FP1, both McLaren cars line up just outside the top 10.
  • Toro Rosso had a bad day, with Daniil Kvyat experiencing the second puncture of the day. The team held back Carlos Sainz while the problem was investigated, and was attributed to the rear wheel hubs rubbing, resulting in the rim cracking and causing loss of tyre pressure. This resulted in the team running less than 10 laps in FP2, effectively ruining their race simulations and qualifying runs.

For the sake of a competitive end to 2016 season, I hope RBR and Ferrari are close to the Mercs on Sunday and puts some real pressure on Nico.
If Mercs are going to run away from the pack, its going to be a boring end for the season.
Hopefully 2017 will mix up the grid a bit and give us some real close racing.

  • Sebastian Vettel topped the timesheets setting a time of 1:40.775 with his Ferrari running on over 10-lap old ultra-softs.
  • Max Verstappen of Red Bull and Kimi Räikkönen of Ferrari were the other runners with a time under 101 seconds.
  • Surprisingly, neither Mercedes figured in even the top 3, with Lewis Hamilton and Nico Rosberg only fourth and fifth, respectively.
  • Daniel Ricciardo came in sixth with his Red Bull.
  • These positions should be taken with a pinch of salt, however, as it is most likely the Mercedes cars are sandbagging their performance, and with cooler qualifying temperatures, it should be more reminiscent of FP2 yesterday. Over the season, Mercedes have been outpaced in nine of the 21 FP3 sessions this year, yet previously gone on to claim pole 19 out of 20 times.
  • The Force India duo of Sergio Pérez and Nico Hülkenberg came in best of the rest. Earlier, Hülkenberg missed the first half of FP3 due to a fuel system issue.
  • Valtteri Bottas and Esteban Gutiérrez rounded out the top 10, for Williams and Haas respectively.
  • The other Williams of Felipe Massa came in only 14th due to a mistake on his qualifying simulation run.
  • Daniil Kvyat ran only 8 laps on Friday, and Carlos Sainz only 26, compared to over 60 laps for most of the other drivers. With Toro Rosso continuing to investigate the issue, they ran far fewer laps than they would have liked during FP3, which will no doubt compromise their car setup for the weekend.

The quicker lap times were set towards the end when the track started cooling down.
During variable conditions track position is everything.
Mercedes didn't seem to go for lap times while everyone else was on the quick runs at the end.
Come Quali, the order will revert to the usual.

  • Lewis Hamilton stomps to pole with a time of 1:38.755, followed by Nico Rosberg in second.
  • An interesting achievement is that Rosberg has always qualified on the front row across the whole of 2016.
  • Daniel Ricciardo (Red Bull) and Kimi Räikkönen (Ferrari) line up on the second row.
  • Their teammates Sebastian Vettel (Ferrari) and Max Verstappen (Red Bull) follow up on the third row.
  • All the top 3 teams cracked the 100-second barrier in Q3 - much faster than last year's pole time of 1:40.237.
  • Red Bull strategically set their best Q2 times on the super-soft compounds, which should enable a different approach in the race, since all the others in the top 10 start on the ultra-soft. We already saw in FP2 how their long-run pace was impressively close to Mercedes.
  • The Force India pair of Nico Hülkenberg and Sergio Pérez line up on the fourth row.
  • Behind them, Fernando Alonso brought his McLaren home in ninth, beating the Williams pair.
  • That leaves the Williams drivers Felipe Massa and Valtteri Bottas as 10th and eleventh.
  • The 6 cars eliminated in Q1 were Daniil Kvyat & Carlos Sainz (both Toro Rosso), Kevin Magnussen (Renault), Felipe Nasr & Marcus Ericsson (both Sauber), and Esteban Ocon (Manor).
  • Toro Rosso were knocked out following extremely troubled free practice sessions that prevented them from setting up the car properly.
  • Jolyon Palmer (Renault) and Pascal Wehrlein (Manor) both comprehensively out-qualified their teammates by progressing into Q2.
  • The 6 cars eliminated in Q2 were Valtteri Bottas (Williams), Jenson Button (McLaren), Esteban Gutiérrez & Romain Grosjean (both Haas), Jolyon Palmer (Renault), and Pascal Wehrlein (Manor).
  • Fernando Alonso pulled off a surprise by going tenth in his McLaren, just behind his former teammate Felipe Massa in his Williams.
  • Red Bull set their fastest Q2 times on the super-soft compounds, unlike the others who were on the ultra-soft. These will be the tyres the top ten start their race on.

  • In the top 10, both Red Bull cars start on the more durable red side-walled super-soft tyres, while the other 8 start on the faster purple side-walled ultra-soft.
  • While most eyes will be on the title contenders, let's not lose sight of the other drivers having their own battles - Vettel leads Verstappen by just 5 points in the drivers' standings, and they start alongside on row 3 of the grid. Alonso leads Massa by just 2 points, and that pair start on row 5 of the grid. And can McLaren finish with one or both cars in the points to prove their improving form? Or will the Williams blitz past them on the straights? Or will a Haas manage to sneak into the points?

  • Mercedes are understandably keen on giving their title contenders a reliable package, as well as proper support through strategy and pit-stops. Memories of the notorious 'Abu Double' race of 2014 will no doubt be at the back of their minds, a race where Rosberg's technical issues immediately put paid to any shot he had at the 2014 drivers' title.
  • An impressive feat for Rosberg - he is on a streak of 27 races where he started on the first row - 21 this year, and the final 6 of last year!
  • A similarly impressive stat for Mercedes - they've taken a record 20 pole positions this season. In all the 3 years of their dominance, however, they've always missed out pole position in one race of the season, and never achieved a clean sweep of poles.
  • The title contenders have also wrapped up other achievements - Rosberg has the most fastest laps of the season, while Hamilton has the most pole positions of the season. One achievement that neither driver will appreciate is that the loser of the title battle will earn the distinction of being the driver with the most victories in a season not to have won the drivers' title.

It's that wringing stomach feeling after an exam which you have not studied for except for the last few hours. Going to check the result, but you know you have flunked. But your heart is still thinking, maybe the teacher was bored, or was watching TV while checking. Maybe there will be news that the paper leaked, maybe I'll get a billion dollar inheritance in the next few minutes and the results won't matter!!

Go Lewis!!

Default Re: Formula 1 : 2016 Abu Dhabi Grand Prix

The qualifying especially the last session was nail biting. But seems Lewis set his car up just that much better in Q3 and Q2 to have a spectacular last sector. Rosberg though has done so much more consistently that he definitely deserves to have the championship this year. And just 3 tenths off Lewis time is no mean feat. Lewis too has nothing to complain with Mercedes having been very fair to both the drivers. I think that shuffling mechanics is a especially good thing to do, to ensure everyone have equal access to resources.

The psychological warfare in press conference etc by Lewis was very interesting. Apparently he feels that he has to make use of all resources on track and off it to somehow get his championship. A far cry from the sullen guy who walked out of a press conference. Now the media is his best friend.

As mentioned in one of the articles I read, for a driver being termed a journeyman, Rosberg is one hell of a classy journeyman.

Looking forward to a exciting race especially with the start what with the Ferrari, Red Bull sandwich.

Star Sports at it again putting the telecast on Select HD. I think it's cue to cut my sport channel subscription.

Drive on,
Shibu.

Drama drama and more drama but finally Rosberg wins his first championship! Not sure if Hamilton really had some issues or was he deliberately trying to slow down the pace and create pressure on Rosberg. Was funny to listen to the radio between the mercedes drivers and the team.
