BMW reclaims Guinness World Record for longest drift with a 232.5 mile slide
BMW has reclaimed Guinness World Record for Longest Drift with 232.5-Mile Slide on 09th January 2018.
BMW had lost the title in 2014(89.5 miles) which it had originally set in 2013 (51.3miles) in an M5. Toyota has pushed the bar higher with a 102.5 mile drift in 2017. To promote the new 2018 BMW M5, the original record-setter Johan Schwartz not only claimed back the record but also set two new world records for drifting.
After eight hours of a continual slide, BMW has set the Guinness World record at an impressive 232.5 miles of unbroken drifting. This betters the previous record by 143 miles
The M5 comes with a 4.4-liter twin-turbocharged V-8, which makes it a very thirsty motor. BMW had to specially develop a new mid-drift refueling system for the sedan to make sure they didn't have to stop because of an empty tank. Chassis experts developed a custom rig much like how we would find on a race car. To facilitate the refills, a crew member pushed himself out of the rear window in a last-gen M5, filling the record car on five separate occasions!!! It was definitely a risky one and the two cars touched wach other
With this, BMW also claimed the record for longest twin vehicle drift, covering 49.25 miles in one hour.
From L-R) BMW Performance Center Driving Instructor Johan Schwartz, Detroit Speedís Matt Butts and BMW Performance Center Chief Driving Instructor Matt Mullins (driver of refueling car) proudly posing with their Guinness World Record certificates
BMW smashed two world records for the Greatest Distance Vehicle Drift and the record for the Greatest Twin Vehicle Drift
The filler for the custom dry break fuel system utilizes quick-release couplings so that the M5 can be refueled while drifting
A custom fuel-cell had to be fitted to the refueling car so it could have a standalone fuel supply instead of siphoning fuel from the stock tank
The refueling car had a custom fitted dash panel that featured toggle switches for the transfer pump and the gauge for the fuel cell

"Insane" is one word that came to my mind I have nothing more to say.
