Update & Notice to Dicor owners
- vehicle has gone in for 30k Service. Fuel Filter (Diesel Filter) assembly will be REPLACED and it Costs Rs.7,400/-. My friend says it is some kind of two-piece assembly consisting of a filter and an electronic sensor.

MODS PLEASE UPDATE TITLE TO 30,000 KMS.

I'm sure you meant INR 7,400

Dhs, or Rs.?
Assembly replaced.
I change indica's diesel filters every 10-15K kms, but never had to change the assembly even once.
If possible take a second opinion. Most Tata workshops try to make money by replacing things which need not be replaced.

Case in point, the car missing due to air in the lines.
From this forum, and on the web I found out that the cause is some air. The reason could be Leaking hand primer.
The workshop service advisor kept on insisting that it requires a fuel pump overhaul(7K party for them).
I inspected the engine bay and showed them the leaking hand primer.

The lil handle there which you pump to prime the fuel pump incase you run dry.

P.s. A diesel fuel filter costs Rs.7,400? Maybe you mean the fuel pump instead?

Nope - I had been forewarned about this by some friends and some TBHPians as well. Apparently its the biggest expense for the 30k service.

This filter must be special in some way - its the only one I've seen that collects kerosene from adultrated diesel, and cuts the engine once its full and cannot filter anymore.

v1p3r and veyron1 were with me in Cochin when this happened once - we drove to the Dealership where the guy stuck his hand into the right wheelwell, moved a flap and unscrewed the sensor first before removing the filter itself. When he took it out it was filled with kerosene and water.

Ahh..this bliss of owning a Safari...Please take the whole parts price catalogue so that you can make early budget planning on 60,000 kms servicing and after warranty maintanance.

There is a old ode by Safari owners down here from long(1998-present) i will PM that to you.

I am doing flip flop between safari and no safari right now.
Every time we see one, we want one, every time my indica alternator fails, we don't want one.
Guess the state of indica's alternator during the time when we actually make the purchase(May-june) will decide whether its a safari or a Hyundai.
Anyways steer, if you could make a list of all the services/repairs and charges till now, it will be great for budget planning.

Its all on this thread. Check each service update for costs. Only other recent cost has been for painting one whole side after some moron in Bangalore ran a key or nail through the entire RHS. I mean the entire side - front to rear.

(a) Engine oil is leaking (i can see oil drops under the engine where the vehicle is parked). Took the vehicle for repairs. The oil drain nut was tightened, but the problem still persists.
(b) On quick acceleration the vehicle leaves lot of black smoke. As per the service advisor, this is because the engine is not able to burn the increased amount of diesel pumped into the engine on acceleration. I'm not sure whether I should accept his explanation, as I used to own a Bolero before and did not face this problem.

Any thoughts/comments are most welcomed... Thanks!
I just happened to read this. I did not see any follow up threads talking about whether you managed to have this sorted out.

Did you pick up a used Safari or a new one? Is it a DiCor or the IDi-turbo? The problems seems like 'Back Compression', something that happens to ageing IDI diesel engines, and not one that we'd expect from a brand new vehicle. I had this problem with my MM540. check if the oil is leaking from the sump or from the space between the cylinder block and everything else - clutch bell housing/ transmission, etc.

TSK, go for it .. The Safari has such a road presence - such a sight to see it go past you gracefully.

Is it the same alternator on the Safari that's there on the Indica ?
