Smile amazing review

Hi Friend,

I would say, one one the best reviews i could find anywhere on the internet on Safari DICOR. I am planning to buy one for myself and was searching for reviews but alas, did not find anything.

But this one is awesome,

I am sure by now your car must have run much more than 10,000 KMS. Can u pls tell me how much have to run ur car and does that rattle a lot now.

The reviews i got was that after 15000:

1) The car starts to rattle and all parts make noises
2) The mileage is below 10 in city
3) Tyres need to be replaced every 20000 KMS as it is a heavy vehicle and eats away the tires
4.) Maintenance is very costly

Can you please send me your inputs on all these points I mentioned.

It will be a great help. You can also mail me at rajeevg@ivycomptech.com

Regards

Rajeev Gupta

Safari recorded its highest ever sales of 1305 nos., in any month, in August

seems like price cut on Safari is really working.

Nope. The only noises you get occassionally are from the front windows if you tend to drive with the windows half (not all the way) down over rough roads. The window glass is really big (and heavy) and will require periodic tightening IF you drive it with the panes halfway down.

2) The mileage is below 10 in city

Mileage is 10 kmpl overll

3) Tyres need to be replaced every 20000 KMS as it is a heavy vehicle and eats away the tires

My tyres are 20k kms old and have not worn out. THese are not OE tyres, though.

4.) Maintenance is very costly

Perhaps its costly for Tata Motors, but not for me. 4-year bumper-to-bumper warranty.

Is it really bumper to bumper. My indica extended warranty did not cover the electricals and all the stuff which fails. It covered things like engine etc., which do not usually fail.

One more set of RETROFITS carried out by Tata Motors in Bangalore last week. v1p3r has the details and says the car feels a lot more 'tighter' now, but from what I can understand the following retrofits are done:

1. Clutch plates and release bearing changed.

2. Gear Lever changed to a shorter lever that is further away from the dash - v1p3r can now change CDs while the vehicle is in 1st, 3rd or 5th gears.

3. Additional spot welds on certain pressure points in chassis and body.

and then some. From what I understand the retrofit was supposed to include new vaccum booster pumps for the rear brakes and some other stuff.

Rear brake lining was worn out, replaced as a consumable during this exercise - Rs.700.

@steeroid : I have been checking this thread & i appreciate ur love for safari.I would like to ask you a question > whenever someone buys a car he has to spare cash for maintainence. For a SUV like safari how much should it cost for basic maintainence per year. The idea behind this question is that if sometime i plan to buy safari i should have surplus cash with me for its repairs. If this post doesnt smell logic ignore it.

Cheers

FIrstly there is no 'love' for the Safari. I will hate it very fast if my experiences were different.

Costs so far:

1. Replacement of side-steps (runboards) after having scraped the plastic covers of the previous runboards - Rs.2,300.

2. First (10,000) service - Rs.1,400.

3. Second (15k) service - free because they had to replace the seal on the oil sump.

4. Third (20k) service - Rs.2,400 (includes change of transmission oil for both gearbox and transfercase, differential oil, and some other fluid - all scheduled 20k maintenance changes)

5. Replacement of rear brake liners - Rs.700.

Thats it. I havent spent anything more in the last one year. Bloody insurance costs more.

Assuming that I didnt have warranty I would have paid for a starter motor, an a/c condensor fan and an oil seal. IMHO even if I added these costs it would still have been cheaper than regular service for D- segment cars except the Elantra.

Forgot to mention, 700 was the estimate. The final cost was under 400 for the rear brake lining.

Nice review Steer. I think you are lucky to have got all those retrofits free of cost.

: Manufacturer procures this at almost 10 - 20 % of this cost.

1. Thanks to SUV who keeps me updated periodically and thanks to Tata Motors who have never refused a request.

2. I'm not the only one who has got these retrofits - several other older Dicors have been contacted. There is a team of 'Field Engineers' from Tata Motors (not the dealer) who go around inspecting vehicles from the selected batches to carry out the retrofits. It is not pot luck.
