It is an unhealthy practice.
Why did they not change the oil filter in the previous service?

It is not supposed to be done as per maintenance schedule.

Need advice on the foll:

-- Changed oil in the first service. Used Mobil delvac super 1300 15 w 40. Is this good or do you recommend some other brand ?

-- No filters were changed in the first service, so should I press them for a change this time ?

-- I believe that wheel balancing is also a part of the second service.
Also need some inputs on System D ? What is it and how is it useful ? Is it advisable to use it this early ( 5k kms )

They changed the oil but not the filter. On hindsight, I do find it a little strange but I didn't contest the decision then.

Just want to know the correct thing this time.

Recommendation from reputed manufacturer of a car can't be unhealthy practice. Now a days engines are manufactured with good tolerance levels. VW and Audi recommend first oil change at 10000 Miles.

The engine oil used on Swift D is of high quality and very durable. It can be used easily for 10000 km without any worries. There is no need to change the oil in the second service.

I have started using System D just last couple of refills (after 10000 KM). Just wanted to be safe. I have not found much improvements in the performance of the car. It may be too early to notice. Maybe after using it for 5 tank fills we will see some improvements. Will keep posted on the same.

System D is supposed to smoothen your ride , increase pickup as well as mileage , supposed to be put in when u fill diesel ( normal diesel only). There is a measuring system for the same , don't remember it at the moment .

A 165 size hard-compound tyre on a 1.1 ton,190Nm car is an unhealthy practice too.
But, it IS recommended by the same cheapskate manufacturer.

Im not going to argue, bro. But, never have I come across any manufacturer skimping on an oil filter change. If its practised elsewhere, Ill be convinced.
Peace

Does it actually work or is it a gimmick ? How often should it be used ?

It actually works, though by how much is debatable. Use it with normal diesel.
I used to use it, and sometimes still do it. Good way of cleaning injectors

nikunj cal : There is a measuring system for the same , don't remember it at the moment .
The measuring system is built into the bottle. In the neck of the bottle are markings for the quantity (5ml & 10ml). You hold the bottle upright, loosen the cap enough to allow air movement through the cap (dont remove the cap). Then squeeze the bottle. The liquid will settle in the neck of the bottle. You squeeze the required quantity and pour it into the tank.

Sure it is not a best practice to have 165 size tyre on Swift D in highways if you are travelling at 120 to 140 kmph but in India the assumption is to do lot of city driving @ 60-80 kmph. Even Honda gives you undersized tyres. Can we say then honda is a Cheapskate manufacturer?

Anyway coming back to the point on Engine oil filter. I have seen the filter with my own eyes when it was changed at 10000 km and believe me it is rugged. It wasn't deformed at all. surprisingly there was not much of muck in it (now-a-days the CRDI or DDIS engines are really precision machined). I think both oil and filter used in swift D are of excellent quality (I have seen manufacturers specification of Mobil Delvac 1300. It is made for heavy duty trucks and some folks have used this oil for 30 K KMs).
