1st to 2nd ->50kmph
2nd to 3rd ->90kmph
3rd to 4th -> 140kmph
4th to 5th -> forget it don't bother

This should help the engine and gearbox.

What say Vikram, Riju?

Vid, I think you could try 100+ for the 2nd to 3rd and 155+ for 3rd to 4th. I find this has beneficial properties, especially wrt linking ester chains in the oil to form better lubricant molecules.

Seriously, why do you want to drive at such low rpms on GQ roads? Are you trying to extract maximum FE out of the car?

Switching to higher gears at 1500-2000 RPM is something I normally do. Lets hear these numbers from others as well.

Guys, you are all suggesting good shifts which will screw up engine n gearbox !

I agree, take the man's advice than trying to do 70kmph in 4th gear. Come on you are driving the so called "Man" treat it like one .

I also do it many time. Once I too forgot to change gear to 5th and kept 80kmph in 4th gear. Only issue is more rpm for the same speed.

Gear transmission ratio for 4th gear is 1 (i.e 1:1), and for 5th is 0.78.

Not only that, the possibility of an engine rebuild should be considered as well. You never know if some pistons might have got damaged.

Buddy, thats a car, not a boat. Maybe you should be more careful during these wet patches that you come across. What if you would need to brake suddenly?

Accord and Octavia beater? Looks like they were 'Just Cruisin... ' listening to Will Smith.

2000 should be ok in city traffic. But why on a GQ???

Agreed, unfortunately the Blore-Chennai highway stretch makes you push at higher speeds.

Guys, I am out of 'gear shift topic', got beaten up enough !

Hey we're not beating you up. Just having some fun at your expense.

On a more serious note though, it is perfectly safe to go 70+ and more on the fourth gear. You dont have to worry about any engine or gearbox damage.

You should maybe accompany us for one of our next track days and see how we drive on track.

Not a problem. What I actually meant in my original post was: normally many of us (let me be safe, I won't say all of us ) try to be on highest possible gear in any speed, I too do the same - but I didn't realize to shift to 5th gear when I overtook that time.

In highway driving situation it is always better and safer to first complete the overtaking and then think about shifting gears. I would personally not recommend changing gears during overtaking.

Is that akin to "Birthday" sometimes being known as "Day of Birth" ?!
