Default Rear fog lamps

Hi folks,

Now that you have found all about the rear fogs and how to make them work, please use it as and when needed only!

It is as much an irritant to the eye to drive behind those fog lamps in regular conditions as the bright lights coming opposite!

Rajesh - So true, the night I found out this gizmo, travelled from elect city to BTM and for some reason all the cars behind me were bright red (thru the ORVM's!!!) I thought what the heck, and after I reached home, left the engine on and walked a good 30-50 feet back and saw the whole road ILLUMINATED in red!!

That was some powerful lamps!!

I will not use them unless its raining or driving thru fog.

Hi santosh,

> That was some powerful lamps!!
> I will not use them unless its raining or driving thru fog.

Only the latter actually deserves those as signified by the name it self!

Thanks for understanding.

Thumbs up KOLLI HILLS - Salem - Trip

Guys, Did a 700km (round trip) to Salem, Kolli Hills and other temples nearby on the I.Day weekend.

Excerpts ---

1) Averaged 16+ through out the trip with speeds constantly 80-110 on the GQ. Included 100Kms of GHAT roads in 2nd and 3rd gear.

2) Kolli Hills has 70 (YES) hair pin bends thru the Forest Dept and another 15 unmarked thru the towns.

3) Both the temples(pics) are around salem with a history of 500+ to nearly 1000Years OLD (really OLD!!)

4) Car behaved very well at speeds above 100, touched 140 once and had to back off.

4) PROBLEM - TDI Engine Vs GHATS - What ever the speed you are in, before negotiating a hair pin, one HAS to cut a gear down to pump the RPM to 2000+, bcoz by the time you are half way across the bend the RPM comes down to 1500+ which can become a boring thing. This; I learnt after 1st 3-4 bends!!

---Otherwise, a great drive and a great place.

Hi santosh,

> Did a 700km (round trip) to Salem, Kolli Hills and other temples nearby on

You do seem to be travelling!

> negotiating a hair pin, one HAS to cut a gear down to pump the RPM to
> 2000+, bcoz by the time you are half way across the bend the RPM comes
> down to 1500+ which can become a boring thing.

Though I haven't traversed a hair pin bend in the Marina yet, I would be in second gear to start with and maybe make a shift to first depending on the gradient / condition of the road.

The ones I did while going to Ponmudi (near Trivandrum) in my City defenitley warranted a second / first combination due to the gradient and the road surface. Of course, it was a breeze with the CVT.

Thumbs up Cochin Harbour

Rajesh, i used to be in 3rd till the enterance of the bend, cut to 2nd to rev upto 2k+ and after the bend go to 2300+ and change to 3rd back. Looks like I am being too optimistic; if thats the case then I am happy the car is doing good and no wonder I got FE of 16+ after 100Kms thru the ghats + another 200+ on the GQ.

------------Some Cochin Harbour Pics below, while on the way back from TVM to blore, I thought I can surprise my better half by a detour into cochin and take a ferry ride thru the harbour'ed ships. It was a fun ride. Njojy..

Default another weekend, another road trip - Blore - Chennai

Hello Guys,

Another weekend, another road trip. I had a fellow team mate;s wedding reception @ Woodlands chennai to attend on sunday eve. Me and my 4 friends decided to pool in and drive down and have a 'silent and sane' trip to chennai and back.

Saturday morning - left BTM layout, picked up 2 guys from Hosur, got 2 Jerry cans of 10Lts and filled them with diesel (chennai diesel crisis!!) and tanked up car @ A2B(Adayar Anand Bhavan @ BP GHAR) after Hosur and crossed Krishnagiri at 11. Reached Vaniambadi at 12 and had a BIG lunch and someone came up with the IDEA of DE-tour to 'YELAGIRI' and have a drink and proceed!!!

So took a de-tour, climbed up Yelagiri which is ~25Km from Vaniambadi and did some trekking and on the way back stopped at a nice place and gobbled up some KF tins and Chivas Regal (not me)...

Reached Ambur - the Mecca of Leather on GQ, got some nice shoes hot from the factory (bought nearly 8 pairs, each around 300-500) and pushed off to chennai.

Vellore - Chennai (Porur) was done in 1 hour and then!! Hell broke loose... chaos and chaos. One 'EXPLETIVE' guy gave a 5CM scratch with his Silencer (on the plastic front bumper) trying to sqeeze between me and a accent at a signal - let go of him!!

Checked into the hotel - ate a couple of hens and half a sheep, the remainder of chivas regal, and slept off @ 2AM...

Sunday morning was a bliss - me and another 2 guys started @ 5AM (yes - 3 hrs of sleep), to Beasant Nagar Beach. Was beautiful... check the pics. A quick drive to marina and across Parry;s Corner and Chennai Central and Mount Road and back to T.Nagar by 8AM, had a superb chennai breakfast...

Lazy morning till 1130 followed, took a walk down Usman Road - shopping area... 1hour later, burning from the 1PM sun checked in the hotel bar, had a beer and left the others behind and I went up to catch some sleep for the night drive.

Got up @ 6PM and no one still returned from the bar yet!!! WHAT--- I ran down, and saw the 4 (NO BAD WORDS to explain the feeling) - amongst 18-20 beer bottles... after swiping nearly 4000Rs for that crap - rushed those guys and got them ready, drove to the reception @ 8PM and cheked out at 830. (2 guys could nt even step out of the car!!)

All this fun in the name of a friends wedding and we spent hardly 30 mins there... drive back was fun with some nice music - chennai outskirts to A2B near hosur was done in 2 hours 30 Mins @ speeds constantly above 120.

------------excerpts----------
1) Fast on GQ for a diesel sibling from TATA
2) Huge boot for 5 people - love it
3) FE was contant 15, low due to speeds mentioned above.
4) MAJOR UNDERSTEER problem at speeds above 110... nearly got killed 3 times
5) Nice Brakes - adequate for the speeds it goes at
6) TOP SPEED - 150KMPH - not advisable!!!

Default The 1st REAL SERVICE

ODO - 8200KM (2mths and 3 weeks)

Problem till date - Last 2 weeks was driving with a blown valve door gasket, a tiny problem which caused about 200-400Ml of Engine oil to be leaked out of the valve door can made the engine look UGLY and DIRTY. Dip stick levels were normal and above danger level - still decided to get the service done.

1-Sep-2008, morning 9AM on the dot; got the job card done and problems explained and severe warning given to the works manager of the showroom workshop and told that I dont want to hear about this problem again.

Around 3PM I get a call and a SMS, job done, bill was 2302.00INR, gasket was 230Rs (warranty claimed) and paid for engine oil, oil and fuel filter, 5 wheels rotating and balancing and alignment.

-------------RESULT---------------

After the 1st OIL change, the engine feels very very silent, pick up is much better and driving has improved a lot. I have given them 500Kms of testing time, If I see any leaks - I am going to regional HQ for a escalation. They have assured me that wont happen since the 1st gasket had a manuf defect and wasnt glued(and torqued enough) properly before sending the car out of the assy line.

------------OWNER REVIEW-----------
After 90 days nearly and 8K+ Kms, I am throughly enjoying the space and rear seat comfort which the 2 ladies in my life (wife and mum) are enjoying. FE is constant 15+ in bangy + hosur road + AC conditions. Highway is also 15-16 coz i floor it and drive at 120+ always.

For 2300Rs (2nd @ 10K) service I am happy at the ownership cost too.

Hi santosh,

Could you give a breakup of the bill, please?

These are what I paid for my 40000kms service in the Marina on 03/05/2008. The price includes tax.

15w40hp engine oil - hp 5.50 @ 152.00 836.00
279018130106 oil filter indigo 1 @ 149.14
254709110119 filter element lucas tvs 1 @ 155.52

mine is similar except I was 'charged' 203Rs per Liter for 5.5 Lts - i will get down to the bottom of this... (so add a 350 here)

also paid nearly 600Rs for wheel balancing + alignment + rotation charges (makes it nearly 1K difference)

Hmmm.... food for thought -

1) will 4 wheels balancing + alignment cost that much?

2) and how ever the grade of oil (mineral based) - can it go upto 200Rs per liter?

I don't remember the exact rates but I had been to Prerana on OMR, Bangalore recently to get my wiper blades changed. Remember seeing a rate close to 200 per litre for engine oil. I think they use only Castrol.

0.5 litre of 2T oil (Castrol Super TT) for my KB125 cost me Rs. 95 last weekend at Castrol Bike Zone, Thiruvanmiyur, Madras!

Hi Santosh,

> mine is similar except I was 'charged' 203Rs per Liter for 5.5 Lts - i will get > down to the bottom of this... (so add a 350 here)

Where I go, it is always HP oil. Don't know about the prices of other brands.

> also paid nearly 600Rs for wheel balancing + alignment + rotation charges > (makes it nearly 1K difference)

I was charged 550 for my Honda for wheel balancing and alignment. I said yes when asked without thinking. I don't do tyre rotation.

> and how ever the grade of oil (mineral based) - can it go upto 200Rs per
> liter?

Hrag has given the probable reason for price diffference.
