Does that mean that the 3 X 1 liter bottles of 'Mobil 1' that I purchased (from an oil dealer) had only a total of 2.7 liters in it?

That should read as 2.850 litres.

Did you too fill 3 litres and it did not show an overfill?

Yes. For my last 2 oil changes, the mechanic poured in all of the 3 liters (in my presence) and it still didn't show an over-fill. I periodically check the oil level, and it has never shown above the 'max' level.

First stop was Essar Automobiles (the MGP dealer on JC Road) to pick up the NGK spark plugs.

Bought the standard plugs, though the dealer tempted me to go for the Iridium and Platinum plugs. The standard ones are much better than the crappy champion spark plugs used by MASS and based on recommendations by fellow Bhp-ian vid6639, I decided to switch to NGKs. Thanks Vidyut!

I also bought 3 litres of Mobilube HD 80W90 gear oil. This is a API GL-4 level oil that can be used with the Alto.

The cost of the items are as follows:

1. Mobil Super XHP 10W40 - 4 litre can - Rs. 850
2. Mobilube GX 80W90 - 3 x 1 litre bottles - Rs. 500
3. NGK park plugs (Part no: DCPR7E) - 3 nos - Rs. 375
Had my Alto Lxi (2008) given for 20,000 km servicing day before yesterday.

1. I had bought Mobilube GX 80W90 gear oil (3 liters) from outside, but the mechanic says the car needs only 2.1 liters. I have around 800 ml of gear oil left with me (even after some spillage while filling gear oil).

@gpa, did you use the full 3 liters of gear oil (just wanted to make sure that my car was not under-filled).

2. Is it ok if I keep the remaining gear oil and use it for the next service(40,000 km, or another 2 years)? I hope it's ok if I buy the same oil next time and mix it with this 'old' gear oil?

3. The MASS had 2 brands of spark plugs - Modi Champion and NGK. I opted for NGK. The mechanic checked and adjusted the clearance of the spark plugs, even though it was new. Is it really necessary to adjust the clearance of a new spark plug? (Also, I am not really comfortable with the way the mechanic adjusted the clearance. He was hitting the electrode on the table to reduce the clearance)

Default Over Filling : A cause for serious concern?

There is a lot of discussion on this thread about overfilling the engine oil and draining the excess. Overfilling by let's say 3-4 mm, is it really a cause for great concern? Purely from a academic perspective, what could happen if there is a overfill situation?

The various doomsday possibilities expressed in this regard notwithstanding, I have come to the conclusion that a slight overfill (up to 5 mm) is not going to hurt the car in anyway.

I agree. If the accidental over-filling would have been a major issue, the engine would have been designed in such a way that it would NOT allow you to overfill (still allowing for oil expansion due to heat).

What ever be the case, old cars which are 'over-filled with engine oil' are known to develop leaks some where, even if not in the engine. An oil leaking car would force you to spend time and money at the workshop, how ever small the time/amount is.

Smile I'm back :)

Howdy guys,

After a hiatus of close to four months, I'm back on T-Bhp. Have tons to update on the Alto and plan to do so over this weekend.

In short, the odo stands at 37,800 kms as of today, a far cry from the 30,000 it stood at in June.

Stay tuned

Post Maruti Suzuki Alto LXi--3.5 years and 50000 Kms

Greetings,

It has been well over a year since I last updated this thread. Life has been insanely busy and I must confess my Alto has been neglected a fair bit. Due to a paucity of time, I have not been active on this forum as well :(

I just emerged from the murky depths a few days ago and ironically, my Alto just touched 50,000 kms this morning. A full service and LTO report is due. Plan to give it for the 50k service on Friday. Will post the updates after that so stay tuned.

Attaching a pic to celebrate the 50k milestone which has come up in three and a half years

Cheers,
gpa

Default re: Maruti Suzuki Alto LXi Ownership Review : 7 years and 70,000 Kms

Friends,

Somehow I got this feeling my wife's alto service center is taking us for a ride.

We got this car second hand and got that to service at Maruti service masters in Chennai. @ 11000 KMs the service center guys suggested they had to change everything and I accepted it without checking and the bill was around Rs.4300.00

After the car did 20000 KMs, again I took the car to them and this time the bill was 6900.00. The only thing done extra was replacing both the ORVMs which costed approx 700 inclusive of labour.

Is this normal? I was told Alto costs very less in servicing but I some how feel this is high because my Lancer costs me only 3.5 - 4K for every 5000 kms service.

Can you throw in some light here guys?

I would try to furnish the bill break up details from home.

^^Can you elaborate on the "everything" bit? At the 24 month and 36 month services, certain items are expected to be replaced. A place like MSM will replace it on the dot, even if the car has not completed the KM, if the specified months have passed.

I paid ~ Ra 4500.00 during my 24 month service, though the odo was at 9897 KM.
