Good to hear about the response you got from Tata Motors, adc. So, a new engine block possibly means doing the running-in once more, hehe.

Very heartening news.
It reinforces my belief about TM and what I mentioned in my earlier post.

For TM car business is NOW big business. They will NOT allow their rating & customer loyalty to wane. The only problem is that the big boffins at their HOs are not kept updated with the ground reality.

ADC: I suggest that you speak to TM-Kolkata Office, now that you have a line communication open with them, about the upgrade/retrofit and also as suggested by SBhaduri, confirm what was verbally informed to you by return email to them and keep tabs on the status of repair at the TASC/ TASS.
TM personnel will not be present during the full course of the repair but I suggest that you open a line of communication with them directly.

Lastly (as SS Traveller said - only 2 smileys allowed.)

Brilliant stuff. Absolutely the right thing to to do for Tata.

Skoda, eat your heart out and learn something from the boffins at Bombay House.

Congrats ADC. Its good to see that TM responded positively. These gestures go a long way in re-enforcing the trust in a brand.

Lets hope that KB gets a lesson out of these from TM officials. Though not sure what exactly had happened there, all these have been due to gross negligence on their part.

Being a Fiat fan, I have been thinking about getting a Punto 1.3, but the thought of sending the car to a TASS was setting me back. May be these incidents will make me think otherwise.

We all wish your TMT to be back on the road in full glory and take you to remote corners of India, in your quest to explore the unknown.

Congrats ADC! I was silently watching this thread and I really appreciate TML now. They were very good to me after all that broken chassis issue. In fact I recently got a call from the regional manager about the performance of the car (after almost 3 months).

I am very sure that you'd be going for your Himachal trip now. Waiting eagerly for the travelogue and some great photos !

Drive safe and all the best !

I am quite sure that the brute force exerted by Team Bhp members have worked in ADC's favor, along with his own brute force.
Now ADC's signature will read like - "Was running on, ran out and now again Running In"

What's the method of running-in the 2nd time?

I am not going to congratulate you since you have not won anything, it was your right and the TATA's have accepted it without confrontation. It shows their commitment and maturity towards their customers.

How many other Car manufacturers would do the same ??

Great news ADC. I was really worried after I saw this thread and was keeping my fingers crossed. Very happy to see the response from Tata, though I still feel that they should let you know the reason for such a failure as you travel a lot and many of them are in remote places. So you should be well prepared so that such things do not occur in future while getting vehicle serviced.

three cheers for getting the right solutions. But don't put your gear down, and chase them like a, lion to ensure they do the work as per your satisfaction. Don't mind giving them regular visit and standing by there side to see the work.

Last thing that can screw the whole effort is poor work by mechanics.

After the "breaking news phone call" at 8 pm or so yesterday, wrote a mail night itself to the TM Kolkata person, who was directly overseeing the work,

writing to reiterate the conversation about complete engine block change that I had with him and also to make it official. A cc was given to the RM TM

[EAST] and Head Customer Service [East] also so that everyone at Kolkata office stays in the loop.

Cheers,
You bet, only hiccup now left is what there before this engine failure - travel leaves. But then what better to test this engine than a Cal-Arunachal-Cal

trip. Great to read also that absynguzzler is on fast path to recovery.

And I do hope the rogue TASS gets their stick!

Absolutely kudos to TM out here for they could have n reasons at first to deny me anything. That said and done, if one goes to the first letter words 'investigate and revert" - they did exactly so and found that they had reasons to know that things are sticky from their side.

Investigation would have undoubted proved of some gross negligence at KB Motors [gross negligence is indeed another kind of sabotage for a customer]. A complete engine block change would not have happened otherwise so quickly.

As said thanks to SStraveller and bagchi [for their technical input and stressing that the engine can never be same once damaged so extensive] and this article [ Troubleshoot Oil Pump Problems ], the wording of my letter was specific to the dates, kms, service history, and also had a summary of the techinical information gathered from the mentioned sources.

Oil pump failures are very rare and could not have failed like that with the spotless service history that was there with this VTT, 60-70 km after coming outside after a brand new oil change.

The negligence and needle of suspision at KB was triggered at Just Services unintentionally when I visted on Monday, the first day it was worked upon. Their first reaction was like:

"Engine oil starts to change colour as soon as the car starts and by that kms would have turned dark or at least very darkish green, but the oil that was in

the sump was almost clear as the new one. So from the moment it came out of KB, the engine was being starved of oil, slowly and slowly, until failed and seized catastrophically."

This very important lead news that I gathered on Monday itself set into motion the whole negligence thing from that TASS. Never on that Sunday I thought this was a big problem like.

Of course, naturally, they changed the tone somewhat as that pits the TASC and TASS against one another, but that is Tata Motors lookout to see who is out of line. Just wanted the engine as magnficient as it was.

I had the call from Mr Bhutia and as said the mail had been sent to them by me stressing the conversation that I had with him. I would be going right now, this late afternoon and see whats going on like and have talk with Mr Bhutia again. A new engine being put in a TASC - just hope I dont get a service light issue.

That engine was murdered, it was a homicide! It never ran out, it was chocked and maimed - it had a painful death!

I really feel sad for that 35k run engine. As I say, ad nauseum, it was perfect. That engine was gunned from the first day for the North Bengal trip. The VTT always started with one flick of the switch whether it was standing for 1 month without moving. It took a 2-hour 3500 rpm all through 1st gear journey at Aritar/Zuluk without missing a beat. It never missed a beat when we were stuck on the rice field incline at Chhattisgarh or in Kuldiha Forest and the engine was screaming at close to 4k rpm. Never a service light issue.

The big test for this engine will come out in the Arunachal trip, if it happens.

Absolutely, as kingshukt said and this incident reiterates, they did what they had to do and the problem responsibility was owned up fast - TM is serious about their passenger car division.

Now that is impossible. No one can stay out there and overlook all time, bigger service stations like KB dont ever allow a customer to stay on the service floor [that is rule of course and I have no problem about that, in fact if I go on poking the work is more hampered] - what happened to me does not happen like that. In fact I would be paranoid to think that everyone of TASS is crook out there. One thing of owning a Tata vehicle [ and for all brand vehicles but for Tata the divergence of quality from one TASC/TASS to other is more] is to first of all spot which service centre is the better one. For me due to the travel, there was no particular location like. 3 scheduled servicings were at 3 different states. Ah! Now did KB had this idea they have a perfect vagabond vehicle going out of primary warranty in 3-4 days, to change a part with another VTT??? Though I still like to consider gross negligence than sabotage, its like 50-50 for me.

What saved my skin this time around was that it happened at 60-70 km just out of the TASS and the still greenish colour of the engine oil.

But one thing I will do now, will go to these small service stations when I just need a engine oil change, here you can be on the service floor and the interaction with the service personnel are much more.

The reality as of right now at this moment, the final closure hasnt come and I have just been confirmed of an engine block change by phone yesterday evening. There are much things to be done over there so that I am not left with misanligned "new" engine or some niggle that I have go through again.

Heading to the TASC right now. Lets see whats cooking over there.
