After refitting my old shock on the same day, the sound stopped. So I told them to hold on the replacement and let me check. Sure enough, the sound was back in a week, so off I got for replacing. Funny enough, after replacing, I got the same sound during the test drive. After a few more check up n tightenings, the sound has disappeared, and has not come back for more than 2 weeks now. So not sure if the actual culprit was the strut or something else. I also hear a muffled thud from the rear struts when I go over a rough patch, it seems to have disappeared atleast in the new strut. Have to check for a some time more to confirm that, and then have the other strut too changed.
This morning, I started getting that familiar creak creak while I was coming out of the Shell in OMR, but this time from the rear-left!

After a quick stop at Hyundai, short test drive with SA, and a look at the under-body, have been told that a new shock absorber will be ordered as this one seem to be leaking! I do not understand - my car has done 17200+ as of today, and I have never abused her - it has not even crashed hard in a pothole. How come then, both the rear shock absorber giving way?

After this change, if I even get a hint of shocks trouble, am switching back to 14" rim, or at least a softer tire (S.Drives are HARD!!)

Love those foot pedals there ph03n!x.
Thanks! You gotta see it - the photos do not do justice. Sometime when I come there...!

For Bangalore, I think 4000~5000 KM clean interval should be fine, along with checking it up every 2500. Note that just because you think it is dirty does not mean it needs cleaning - these things can take fair amount of dust. Hope you saw KPZen's pic of a few 100 gms of dust he got out (ofcourse THAT choked it!!)

Welcome to the club! Hope you have read KPZen's thread with the filter, though! Nothing negative there - just that the filter seems to clog up fast in dusty environment - esp if you have a Pete's onboard.

Note that KPZen's daily route had a lot of dust, with constructions and all.

The car's warranty will not be affected by putting in K&N or Green Cotton or Piper Cross.

So the 15 inchers are hard on the shocks? I'm dying to try out 15 inchers on my car. Even if its just for a short test drive of 15 to 20km. Want to see the difference in handling and ride quality.

Its not really the 15" - its the hard S.Drives, coupled with the fact that as I went 15", the side-wall's height comes down that is making my ride hard. I don't think they are shocks-killing-hard, though - that was an over-the-board statement from me

I will be going for something soft and comfortable - A.Drives maybe, when I change the tires next.

Update: Had the shock absorber changed on Friday (9th April). It took a good 5 hours' time, and when I drove back I thought I heard something. Was in a hurry, did not pay much attention.

Sure enough, there is a new kind of a sound coming now when the left-rear shock is working. Worse still, I hear a thud too from the right-rear. Spoke to my SA, Nirmal, who has asked me to leave the car with him on 15th for a day and he will get an experienced senior mechanic to fix it for good.

A quick recap of my wheels - 195/55/R15 S.Drives on 6.5J alloys. The offset of the alloys is 30mm, while the offset for the Getz is 35-45mm. I do not have a problem of the tires fouling with the body (at least, not anymore - was happening in the rear-left alone).

I have changed both the rear shock absorbers under warranty because of a scrapping noise I used to hear. The shocks, according to my SA, was found to be leaking oil.

Is my offset ok? I read somewhere that 5-7 mm of difference in offset should be fine.
Is my problem with the shocks caused by my tire / alloys setup?
Any other suggestions please - this is driving me crazy!!!

Default Update 2

Had left the car this morning by 10 AM for fixing up the two distinct noises I am getting from the rear. Got a call at around 5:30 PM telling me that one of the two noises (the comparatively higher pitched noise) from the suspension has been fixed. The second noise seem to come from the rear panels or somewhere around, and they are working on fixing that too - will get my car tomorrow.

I was rear ended by an Innova earlier, wondering if this rear panel noise has got anything to do with that.

Default The car is back, but....

After two days of fixing noises, the car is back to its absolutely silent self. The replaced rear-left shock absorber was found faulty and a new replacement was fixed in its place. All is well that ends well - but for a twist in the tale for my poor rocket - my rear-ending episode is coming back to bite my rear literally. From the looks of it, I thought the damage was only on the bumper, which did not look much at all. I was surprised, because the Innova's bull bar had crashed and ruined the bonnet quite a bit, but the rocket was barely bruised. Now it looks like all the impact was absorbed by the chassis

My SA had the entire rear (bumper, panels, etc) stripped to ensure nothing rattles / makes any kind of a noise. That's when he notices that the rear-ending has crumbled the metal near the spare wheel's well, as well as the chassis frame. Nothing major, he says, and I can drive around with it. But advised me claim insurance and tinker them off. I am planning to take it to Raghav for a look tomorrow, lets see how that goes.

When you had your rear shocks etc replaced, would they not have had to remove your bumper that time itself?

Not required Prasanna, they need not remove the bumper for replacing the rear shock absorbers. They remove it from the left (or right, depending on which shock absorber you are removing) side of the boot (concealed in the panels), and remove it from the bottom.

That's bad!!!! Was the impact too big for the chassis to be bent? Whats the solution now?

I'm sorry, the chassis is not actually bent - a cross member is. I had it checked by Raghav the next day and he said there is nothing to worry. Will be taking it to him for a tinkering job before my 20k service (at 18k now), will post detailed pics of the damage once I get to it.

Again, feeling so sorry about your rocket mate :(

If possible can you get a pic of the damaged part, just to see what it is. And what tinkering job can get it rectified without future issues?

Sure, will get pics of the damage, as well as the tinkering when I get to it - should be mid-May though.

Prajesh, this one is for you

Though it's been about 3000 KM since I cleaned the air filter, it looks pretty much ok - guess I am not driving in that dusty an environment.

Thanks a ton for the pics !!

Interesting, the design of Green & K&N filter is quite different.
Wonder which design does a better job

I guess we gotta swap our air filters and see if the K&N gets as clogged as the Green Cotton for your driving condition, and if the Green Cotton is as not-so-clogged as the K&N in my driving conditions. What say?!!
