Early this week took a test drive of Safari 2.2 VVT which a colleague bought and found it to be much more peppier than the older 3.0L version.

Btw, I noted a small glitch during my test drive which is also confirmed by him that while in 4th gear the car stalls momentarily ( nothing happens when you press the accelarator) and then picks up momentum at around 40kmph. This has not been observed in other gears.

Any idea what could be the issue so he can get it rectified in his next service?
Thanks mobike008. As for powerloss, i never faced the same, usually my driving habit is to keep it in the turbo region. I switch to 3rd to 4th when rpm is around 2800 to 3000 hence it always remains above 2000 rpm.

Other suggestion is to use normal fuel along with System D. I use system D once every 3000 kms or any long drive outing.

There is no solution as such from TASS about this issue. So many reports are there in Tata Safari technical thread. I also mentioned in my ownership thread.

@v&v Nice looking Safari LX. For Alloys fitting did you require to cut the fender?
Thanks anuj. I am using the stock tyres hence no cutting required.

Awesome! Black looks best for the beast. And the alloys complement the looks very well. How much did you pay for the Neo alloys? set of 4 (or) 5?

Thanks, Sorry avinashsg. Missed your post. As for alloy it costed me 4.5 each. I have set of 5.

Also recently got filled tyres with Nitrogen. My safari needed pressure topup once a week as the rear tyres use to loose 2-3 psi. Hope this resolves it.

How would filling nitrogen prevent air loss from tyres? It could either be a puncture or air leaking from the valve neck.

The main advantage of nitrogen gas is being larger molecule hence leakage through values or micro puncture will be almost zero.

I had already checked for puncher, changed valve, still there was a 1 to 2 psi loss in 7 to 10 days. Will update feedback after nitrogen filling.

Also there are many claims that it increase fuel efficiency, increase tire life, cooler running tire temperature. But i dont buy these and i am only looking forward to increased tire pressure retention.

Will greatly appreciate the feedback, I too am having pressure loss in one tyre.

Its being long since i have updated this thread. Nitrogen filling has been highly satisfying. The pressure loss is almost negligible. Only checked twice, Once 1 point was to be topped in the rear wheel in June. Entire Leh trip there was no issues.

Current Odo - is at 38000. No major issues faced. Did a tyre rotation and balanced at 32500 kms. We be getting it checked again after this weekend again. No alignment issues faced.

Planning to change oil at 40k kms.

Default re: Tata Safari 2.2 VTT - Black Beast - Report at 3 Yrs & 51000 kms

OBSERVATION : After our Gujarat trip or rather after my 30 k service the coolant top up was more required than earlier. Earlier the topup was negligible but post 30k service, the coolant has reduced by good 1 ltr during our Sariska trip. Got it checked at Autolink, the feedback was ALL OK. Similar observation in our Leh trip, Gujarat trip also. The quantity was less.

Post gujarat trip, after 10 days, again the issue cropped up, now the topup required weekly was around 200 - 400 ml. Again sent to auto link for checkup and again no leaks found.

On 4th safari got overheated, the temperature needle crossed the center position, which has never happened. Again a visit to autolink they casually checked again but still unable to trace the coolant loss requested to send the car next day for through inspection. Again on 5th they checked and again reverted saying all ok as there was no visible leakage and topped the coolant level.

Finally on sunday after a drive while parking i saw the coolant leak , dripping from the shield. Again it was sent to Autolink on monday, they checked the at the timing belt area and finally found leakage source. It was found from WATER PUMP, this leakage was happening only at higher rpms only that why it was not observed at idling and was difficult to trace. It was schedule to changed under extended warranty on Tuesday.

Parts Changes : idler, timing belt, autotensioner, waterpump.

I had to pay for Gasket and IDLER which came to Rs 1098. The service was quick and same day approval and work.

INFERENCE : : In case of similar observation ie frequent coolant topup, do tell the service advisor to check the timing belt area too. if its a minor leak, it will never showup.

Post timing belt change, no other issues and its running pretty trouble free. Recently we did 5300 kms Delhi - Goa - Blr - Delhi trip.

Update at 51k kms.
At time morning start has taking toll on battery(36 months) during this winter so got the battery changed to Amaron Hi-way battery 80 AH for Rs 3700/- only. 2 years warranty.

Interesting Odo during our Delhi - Goa road trip

Maybe not the right place, but I have noticed this jerky motion in my Indigo eCS around the same rpm in 4th (speed appx 40-50), not in other gears and the car pulls well on application of throttle. Could this be an ECU related issue ? Reported this to Autolinks, Rama Rd in the 4th service, a test drive was done, but fault could not be repeated by the SA.

Just a hunch - could these be related issues ?

read every post of your thread and enjoyed/learnt more about this beast. i'm expecting mine next month and am really looking forward for good set of alloys (negative offset ) on the stock tyres. Can you suggest me places besides KB where i can hunt for them. I plan to get them as soon as the beast rolls out from the den.
also did you sum up the total amount that you incurred in last 3 years. Hats off to your maintenance, the beast looks as good as new in the last pic even after all those road trips across india.

Never had such problem. Try up shift at around 3000 rpm, should resolve the issue. I usually drive in the band of 2200 to 3000 rpm. It keeps then engine in the power band and didn't find any major deviation in mileage.

Thanks harish. Congrats in advance for you beast. Alloys i bought from Reliance auto zone, grg, they had decent collection of alloys. KB can be tricky unless you know some good shop.

As for costing , never bothered for keeping a track as i have been consistently getting decent mileage in city as well as highways. City it has never dropped below 11 and never below 12 on highways. No major expense apart from the routine service.
