Ampere, a very good question. Unfortunately I dont have an answer yet. I was told by the service center that they suspect a component failure within the ECU which led to the catastrophic failure. I was running only on stock ECU and no modifications done from my side.

FIAT said they are returning the faulty ECU to the manufacturer for failure analysis. I had never followed up on that and completely forgotten about it. I will drop a mail to FIAT to see if they have a conclusion on that one. Thanks for reminding.

Default Chennai>Veedur>Chennai

Today morning when I was checking my Linea before a day-long trip to my village, Veedur, near Tindivanam, 'check engine' message and icon were displayed on the MID. When I opened the opened the bonnet I was horrified to find some wires chewed up by Chennai resident rats. Then, self and my brother-in-law swung into action.

After the treatment, again I checked. The 'check engine' message and icon display were gone for ever. All the parameters were okay. Then, we left for our village Veedur in Villupuram district and returned back home by 8:45 pm.

Wow Ravi!! Nice thinking. But you had the guts to take the car on a long drive after the temporary fix, given the razor thin service network that FIAT has. Rats are a huge menace. They just keep coming back whatever you do unless you have a closed parking.

Today, I checked my Linea and found to be perfectly alright. The missing piece of wire was also found at the parking space, which is kept as spare for future!

Ravi Sir,
Suggest you to put some Dried Tobacco Sticks which acts as a deterrent for the rats. My uncle was having the same issue and with the dried tobacco he was able to resolve it on his M800.

Unhappy Side-Wall Bulge Observed & New Tyre Got Fitted

Today morning while cleaning my Linea, I observed a bulge on the side-wall of the front right tyre. I was shocked to the core. Perhaps, it might have caused due to a deep pothole I drove into during my recent Bangalore to Chennai trip. My Linea suffered from a tyre burst only last year. The details are here (ARTICLE: How to handle (and prevent) a Tyre Burst / Blowout). I don't want to take any chance any more. I have decided not to introduce tube in the deformed tyre for further usage. In the evening, I took my Linea to the neighbourhood Lal Enterprises and got her a brand new Good Year GT3 with the manufacturing date as 3113 [31st week of 2013] costing Name: rupeesymbol.gif

Size: 578 Bytes4950. The only consolation was that the outgoing damaged tyre covered 18,000 km in the toughest terrains of Himachal Pradesh in two trips.

Thanks, MK. All along, phenol-mixed water was sprinkled around my Linea in the night. I will keep the dry tobacco too as some multi-pronged strategy is required to fight the rodents!

Sir, take care to wash your hands with soap when handling the wires the rats chewed on. There is a danger of picking up infections.

Default My Linea Spent Today At Ramkay FIAT, Chennai

It's time for an update.

There were a lot of pending repair works that my Linea needed:

1. During my recent visit to Trichy, the rear right power window stopped working all of a sudden.

2. During my recent visit to Veedur, the chrome strip on the rear right quarter glass beading was found missing.

3. During my recent HP trip, the horn pad became moody and worked only in one position.

4. After returning from the HP trip, I found the top clamp of the air filter assembly was cut.

5. Some months back, I observed that the belt holding the battery was chewed by Chennai rats. But, since the battery was held tightly, I just ignored it.

6. During my HP trip, one of the mud flaps was found cut and dangling. Somehow, I managed to screw it back by introducing a washer. At that time itself, I decided to go in for the new moulded type flaps.

7. I explained the recent episode of rats chewing up wires that go to ECU. I was told that error codes needed to be deleted. I also requested for soldering of the joints and proper insulation.

So, I called Sukanya, CRM, Ramkay FIAT, Chennai, yesterday and got an appointment fixed for today morning. My Linea entered Ramkay FIAT this morning by 10:30 am and I got back my Linea by 4:45 pm. I was expecting only completion of ~75% of works due to non-availability of spares. I could not believe my ears, when I was told that all the required spares were very much available!

Ravi sir, labor charges for mudflap replacement does seem a bit too much, 350 plus taxes.

But kudos to Ramkay for stocking up all possible spares, am amazed that they had the rear quarter glass chrome beading in stock, this is one of their strong points and change the perception of availability of Fiat spares.

Angry War Against Rats Continues!

As recommended by many well-wishers, I started the tobacco treatment today to ward off rats from my Linea.

Sir, a question ,
would like to understand if you are keeping the tobacco sticks in the bay only when the car is parked and when the bay is cold enough. even I have to try this out.

Yes. I will remove the tobacco sticks, when I take Linea out. I will observe as to how effective these tobacco sticks are daily, and if necessary, I will increase the number of sticks and keep them at many places inside the engine bay. I think I can write a thesis on my experiments with rats and tobacco sticks!

Just wondering that , is it possible to make a paste of tobacco and apply it over the wires, my car is parked outside in Bangalore and will not be surprised if there is a bevy of rats inside the car as the car is rarely used. I will be waiting for your thesis on the biting subject .
