Battery Change

Finally got the OE battery replaced in my MJD. OE was DIN 50 Exide and changed with DIN 55 from Bosch S5 series. For those pondering on whether DIN 55 will suit the MJD, well the DIN 55 is a perfect fit on the MJD. There is enough space to even accomodate the DIN 60.

The car cranks in double quick time and even the cranking sound feels fresh

11/12/13 turned out to be a sour day for me and my MJD :(

Got invloved in a minor accident that left my MJD badly bruised. It so happened when I was driving to work as usual in the regular route. The wagon R in front braked all of a sudden right in the middle of the road which lead the santro in front of me rear-ending him and me rear-ending the santro :(

Speeds at that section was in the 40's but it all happened in a span of few seconds. I did not have the time to even downshift from 3 to 2 to gain some stopping power from the engine, but could'nt do in time to save from crashing.

The end result was my bonnet now out of shape along with a cracked left head lamp. Luckly no major damage to my bumper but the front impact bar had bent in. Really lucky with the bumper holding inspite of the impact on the front beam.

Car is now with Murugan. Hoping to get it ready by next week in time to head back home for vacation.

The wagonR said he stopped because of a pedestrian cutting across all of a sudden. I'm not sure if he had no choice but to stop like that or was he telling the truth. Hence cannot comment on who was to be blamed.

Felt maybe I should have kept some more distance from the vehicle upfront. And yes, better brakes would have definitely helped.

Few pics after the incident.

Well, Hopefully you can live with the crack on the headlight.

If not, your wallet will be lighter by 5 grand just for the right headlamp assembly.

I too brushed the rear of a tempo while going across a railway crossing. The tempo guy slipped the brakes while negotiating a big pothole and rolled backwards. Luckily, as the speeds were as good as zero, just got a small crack on the headlamp.

Yeah, the OE headlamp costs a bomb.

I remember reading somewhere that we could buy Korean headlamps for around 3k per piece. h14, you may have a look at them, as well.

The price you indicated is for the pair. What I highlighted was for one side.

I suppose 99rpm does not ship only one side i.e. irrespective of your requirement, you need to buy both.

But, in the local market or with some suppliers, you buy only left or right for 5 K.

Further, considering the left assembly of my Fiesta classic cost INR 3700 for one side, I don't think we can say that the price of Stile Headlamp is exorbitant but yes, it's about 1.5 times the normal price.

Cheers

Let me clear few things, the cost of 1 OE head lamp for Palio Stile is Rs. 10,500/-. So going in for the OE lamps is ruled out in my case as I'm in need of two.

A cheaper variant is avaialble. No idea of whether these are made in Taiwan/China/India but these are priced around 3-5k depending on the shop as that is what I found out over the last weekend.

Two main FIAT part dealers in Chennai quote these Taiwain lights for Rs.4600/- per piece whilst a guy in Pudhupet scrap market quoted the same for 4k. Further bargaining and he came to 3650 and I got the same from him.

Fellow FIAT'ian Syed in Bangalore was able to negotiate and he said he can get the same for me for Rs.3200 each (shipping to chennai extra). But I did not have the luxory of time since the tinkering work was almost complete and had to finish all the works by this week before my vacation starts. Thanks are due to Syed for spending his saturday in the market hunting for lights for my car!

So I decided to pay more and pick them in Chennai. And the same guy had assured that he can repair my exisitng broken/faded lights. So will be going to him next month to get it done as he requires atleast a weeks time to repair.

Thanks again to a fellow FIAT'ian Muthu who was in the Chennai scrap yard hunting for my lights and finding this particular dealer and thereby enabling me to get a good deal for these non-OE lights.

Work details on the car:

Inspected the car on Saturday and the tinkering work was completed. He asked us to get the lights ASAP for him to start fixing the bumper back. Some WIP pics:

My apologies guys. Maybe I was in dream land.

You guys are right. Each one cost 10.5 K. Phew, what was I thinking.

Car is back now. Picked up from Murugan on Dec19. Extremely happy with the job done and the charges are extremely reasonable. I was charged 8.5k for tinkering and painting. Full bonnet and part of bumper painted. Full bumper given clear coat.

Lights are better than expected. Beam quality not upto OE standards but not bad either. Need to correct the focussing.

Mjd then got me safely to Coimbatore on Dec20. Myself JayD and Dheena stared in my mjd and Dheena's punto. Mjd was back to business and enjoyed the highway stint once again

Once back in Coimbatore it was time for interiors. Was literally fed up with the OE ones and it was getting extremely difficult. So decided to get the mjd koyas'd and below is the end result

Its 57,345 on the odo now and time for service.

As usual works carried out at home. Switched to Mobil super 3000 fully synthetic and changed oil filter air filter and diesel filter.

Cleaned the brake pads and shoes also.

The Michelin's are still doing duty for 57k kms and time to change them is near. The thread is still deep and intact and 'looks' good for another 5-7k kms but have become hard.

Already the mjd has got a new lease of life

Change of shoes

Finally decided to change the tyres. As in case of my s10 got an excellent deal on nexen.

The nexen's gained a lot of respect from me after some hard driving in my s10 and so decided to go with them.

The only size available was 195/60/14. Initial impressions are that the car seems a tad slow and steering heavier.

Planning to use for a while and swap to the s10. Only time will tell.

The Michelin's have lasted for 57,400 kms

60,000 kms update.

The MJD has now clocked well over the 60k mark and I'm sharing few updates done over the last month.

Got the Airfilter cover replaced to the new type. Seems there was a recall for this long back and many like me were not intimated during the Tata split. So got the same changed now. It costs Rs. 150

Existing type

New model (Notice the change in design pattern)

Additionally got the clutch MC assembly from dhanam auto stores in Coimbatore. The Mc has developed leaks and needs to be changed. The SC is of the plastic type and is good without any leaks.

Got the MC replaced with Murugan in Chennai:

Fiat Palio MJD - Ownership log @ 75,000 kms-depesune.jpg

After the MC change, we were not able to bleed the clutch line properly since the SC is plastic type and does not have an option to bleed. Hence as of now there is inconsistency in the clutch pedal operation.

Murugan suggests to replace the SC from plastic to metal one, but I'm contemplating on the same. Planning to get it checked from my mech in cbe once before deciding to change.

Other than that, the car is doing good

Note to Mods, please help to update the title to Fiat Palio MJD - Ownership log @ 60,000 kms

Clutch Change:

It all started when I left the car behind in coimbatore and got the Linea to chennai just for few days. The MJD was definitely angry upon this move and refused to move, the gears simply would'nt engage and my dad was left with no choice than to leave the mjd and drive the amby until I returned back to cbe.

I requested CAI to come and check the car and they came and tried to bleed the clutch and there was marginal improvement. But the gear shifting was harder than ever and hence decided to replace the clutch kit. Though the culprit was the SC, decided to change the kit since there were symptoms of the clutch wearing out which was evident especially while engaging the reverse.

I was back again in cbe during the poll day and after casting my rights, asked my mech to come over for the clutch change since I had to get back to chennai the next day. They came around 10:30 in the morning and started work.

Since the MC was recently changed, the work to be done were the clutch kit, release bearing and SC. Decided to stick to the orignial type SC as recommended by my mech. Work was completed around 2:30 pm and I took a drive. It was pretty nice to feel the smooth clutch after 4 yrs of ownership. It is definitely still on the harder side when compared to the S10/GTX and a zillion years behind when compared to the clutch of a Linea

Nevertheless, the clutch is finally changed and MJD is back to duty. Clocked close to 2000kms after the clutch change and all is well Some pictures of the clutch change follows:

Quite a lot of updates coming up

May 24, Saturday, I left the car at Murugan's garage for lower arm ball joint change.

Was feeling some weird noises coming up and I was foolishly attributing them to the hard tyres and also sometimes assumed tyres scrapping the fender since the noise was prominent with wheels turned.

Checked with Murugan and he was quick to point at the lower arms. Decided to change the ball joints alone and it was a days work and got it done.

Since then, the MJD's been riding beautifully. Should have changed the ball joints quite earlier.

Fast forward by one week and I land in Coimbatore on a 2 week vacation. Wanted to complete all open issues in this time.

First in line was egr cleaning and change of coolant. Egr was never cleaned before and coolant I lost track on when it was last changed.

Both tasks were completed at home yesterday. The removal of egr valve was time consuming and labour intensive. This task alone took over 3 hrs from removing to refitting after cleaning

Once it was done, flushed the radiator and added paraflu and the MJD gulped 4 liters happily. Balance 1 litre is in the boot which I would add after a small drive for the coolant level to go down.

Next in line was the light upgrade. These taiwanese head lamps have poor focusing abilities and I have a tough time in the highway.

Last week whilst driving down from Chennai had a tough time once it started raining and that's when I decided it was way over time to work on the lighting and got Hellas installed.

Tried the 500FF and black magic and I was in love with the lighting abilities of the black magic but somehow I felt that neither 500FF nor black magic suited the MJD and the overall looks were not to my liking and hence settled with commet 450.

Focused them nice and low and they light up the floor nicely. Feel lot more safer on the highway now. Did the lighting work at RM in Coimbatore.

Hi guys,

I have a 2003 Fiat Palio 1.2 EL PS from new and have only driven 26000 kms since date! 2 weeks back the car developed some peculiar problems. First, the blower for the ac would not come on even though the ac itself was working. This was traced to a dead relay which was replaced and it solved the problem.

Then I had a scary incident again involving electricals. After leaving office for home one day, it started raining very heavily and it was fairly dark by then. I put on the headlamps and wipers and to my horror, neither came on! I frantically tried all positions on the wiper stalk and the reverse wiper and kept turning the headlamps on and off but they were dead and I could barely see in the heavy rain. The only thing that thankfully came on were the high beams and I somehow drove back home after nearly ramming a car in front because I couldn't see.

My local electrician checked the fuses and the components inside the plastic cover between the stalks but he couldn't detect a fault. A few days later, the battery went dead too though that was bound to happen since it lasted for more than 4 years.

Any clues as to what to look for? I will be getting a new battery of course but I have to fix the wiper and headlamps to drive the car again. Any inputs will be much appreciated.

The headlamp and the wiper stalk seems to be at fault. Generally they are linked.

Did the mechanic check the relay? Inter-change with the horn relay and see.

Where in Kolkata do you stay? Who is the mechanic?
