Default New Getz 1200 Km Report

Hi Guys,

As some of you know we had bought 3 new Getz cars in the family in the 1st week of December 2005 one of which was to be my new toy. I am narrating below the experience of my new toy. I took delivery on the 8th of December from Shreenath Motors at Andheri in the evening and went straight away to change my rims and tyres. I upgraded to 14" stock rims which were of a swift and fitted 195/60/14 Yokohoma ES100 rubber. Reached home by 9pm after fitting some basic accessories.

On the way home I found the car to be underpowered so I was at the Hyundai Motor Plaza workshop first thing in the morning. On investigation they found the plug gaps to be wrong which was rectified. I was still not happy with the pickup, so I fitted a K&N Xtreme series conical air filter with a custom intake pipe, Bosch 4 point plugs & MSD 8.5mm super conducter plug wires and found a drastic change in the pickup, power and the sound(simply amazing roar from the filter). Drove for about 600kms and installed a complete free flow system and found some more improvement in the power.

I found that the brakes were spongy and the handbrake was not OK so back I was at the company where they found a faulty oil seal in the master cylinder and rectified it. Overall I was still not satisfied with the pickup and kept complaining to them. They said all Getz cars have poor torque at low rpm and that the pickup would improve after 1st service. I waited to complete the required kms and finally this morning gave my car to them after completeing 1200kms. Strangely they do not change the oil at 1st service and only do do at the 2nd sercvice which is at 10,000kms or 6 months. I insisted and told them to change my oil and filter which they did on charge basis. I switched to Mobil 1 after doing a complete engine flush. I gav ethem the car for the service and a repeat complaint of poor pickup.

I got a call at 4pm saying that I should pick up the car. On reaching they told me that the problem was due to the headers and that my warranty was void for carrying out modifications. I lost my head and aksed them to put it in writing that the problem was due to the headers. Argued for 1 hour and they finally called someone from the company. I told them it was a faulty ECU and they could immediately check if the problem goes by fitting another one and checking which after some more arguing they did. As I rightly doubted that was the culprit.

Now for the fun I had challenged them that the ecu was faulty and that I would not claim any warranty on this car if I was wrong but if I was right they would have to undertake in writing that they would honour it with the existing mods.(which they gracefully&honourably did). To my pleasant surprise they gave me the first reprogrammed/remapped ECM in Mumbai (they were supposed to upgrade software in Jan end)as per them and the results are simply superb.

At the end of the day I have now a pleasurable car to drive and my warranty intact and a big smile on my face.

Nice review viper.

Am a little surprised that you had so many things to fix on a new car (esp Hyundai). But its nice to know that with a little effort on your part, they did the needfull and have kept you happy.

But, how were you able to know the car was underpowered? Were the other 2 cars you bought more powerful? I guess a common man would be helpless in this situation and continue driving.

Hi,

I get cars tuned as a business and knew this car did not feel right. The power used to kick in only around 3500 RPM. Also it was an almost impossible task to generate a wheelspin in 1st gear(even after all the mods) which further confirmed my doubts that something was critically wrong.

I guess driving different cars and a general knowledge as to how certain mods carried out make a car respond better helps.

For everything u have done to ur getz... a swift would have been a better choice and would have cost the same (or may be less) than ur getz(stock) after mods.

Ever heard of a nice little term called "RUNNING IN!!!!!". Headers, free flows, K&Ns and wheelspins - Boy, you are racing her hard.

Hallo Viper, is there going to be a new ECU put in all Getz cars now? I am due to take mine in for scheduled service by Feb, and it is still within warranty.

Thumbs up

hi,

@extreme_torque - I disagree I would yet choose a Getz over a Swift anyday. One ex-problem car does not mean all Getz are bad.

@ GTO - You know me, but just for the record no racing has been done yet.

@filcord - Unfortunately no. Mine was changed because the original was defective and was just plain lucky to get the latest reprogrammed one.

Just went back to the service centre to close my job card and get the car washed which was pending. They did the washing and even polished my car as a goodwill gesture for the trouble I had to go through.

Hyundai After Sales is simply excellent

Of course yaar... you also know that. It is just like they have changed the OS. Now for that if your computer boots faster, can do multiple processing (ok fast switching) etc then good for you.

Hey Viper, I'm really surprised to hear the problems witha brand new car. Especially after all the compliments bestowed upon Hyundai. but, as you say, this is a one-off and it was nice of them to honour the bet they lost!

For any of you who have not seen Viper argue his case, let me just tell you that he can manage to get a thirsty, lost guy to part with his last bottle of water in the middle of a desert!
