I was thinking about the most rarest of vehicle, gave two options and thought some, came up with one which is bound to be rare in India, in fact used to be rare here in UAE as well till about a year ago, but have been mushrooming around town recently - the HUMMER H1, of course it isnt easy maintainence, but it is rare.

Although there is also an alternative to the H1 for less than 1/10th the cost, the H1 Kits from Urban Gorilla. Pricing starts from US$ 5995 for the basic, excluding shipping (they ship internationally). The good thing about these kits are they are made to be sit on any pre-existing 4x4 or pick-up.

Check out this site for more info - Urban Gorilla 4x4 Bodies :: Home

Better than McLaren F1, Ferrari, Konseignangangnang etc. Except for Chrysler, all other companies or their parent companies are present in India.
Hyundai, GM, Ford, Honda et. al are here and in future we will have Jag/LR.

Thumbs up rare but not cheap

Most of the cars mentioned here are certainly rare in India, but not cheap / easy to maintain, except perhaps, a few mentioned by Mayavi. However, the import duties for those will be high, which beats the purpose of keeping costs low.

I'd recommend Taarzan. It's rare - one of a kind - and you can always get it serviced by DC. I read somewhere that it's based on a Cielo, so it'll probably give decent mileage compared to other exotics.

ps. Will also save lives once in a while.

Everyone has forgotten the nice premium hatches.
How about a Fiat 500 or Bravo?
They are exclusive and the only one of each on Indian roads. That too, these are the test drive ones driving around India with the Ferrari 612s.
And since Fiat is planning to get them to India, the maintenance will be pretty acceptable as well

One question to address is:
How rare does your friend, need to be?

The Indian government prohibits importing cars
  1. that are left-hand-drive.
  2. that are over three years old.
One to three year old, right-hand-drive cars are (unfortunately) not so rare in India, anymore !

Over the years, nearly every kind of car is available in India.

I remember Bhushan mentioning that he picked his blue Audi TT,
because it shared mechanicals with a car already available in India -- the Skoda Octavia RS turbo
The presence of Indian service stations and parts availability in India,
was an important consideration for him.

It could be reasonably rare, to get an original RHD convertible or station wagon version of some D-segment car commonly available in India.

Default Rarest

In that case here are some options:

Toyota 4JRunner: I bet none in India owns one.Awesome powerful beauty in two tone colors. landing price in India: $50 - $65K

The entire range of Jeep: Wrangler, Cherokee, Liberty. All very masculine. You don't get to see any on Indian roads

The SUVs n MUVs in the Dodge range. Raw power with that grumbling sound that anyone would die for.

The Mazda CX 8 series and the R6 series. All very nicely priced and not to be seen in India.

The 4Runner is a Toyota Landcruiser Prado for all the markets outside the U.S. It is identical in almost every way to the prado except for subtle differences in the styling. So, if you've seen a Prado you've seen a 4Runner.

Dude..... "sedate"....and your referring to the R32, R33 and R34 Skylines? They gave Italian exotics a run for their money while running stock. Its the most iconic car Japan has ever produced, beats its own stablemate...the Datsun 'Z' cars in that respect.

Nissan should have retained the Skyline moniker for the GTR, its a spiritual successor to the icon. If a skyline is 'sedate', then the Mitsubishi EVO and Subaru Impreza Sti are Tonka toys.

You probably mean Toyota FJ Cruiser, its styled to look like a Mark 1 Land Cruiser and has the two tone paint job.
