Default Mercedes 2.5 16V Cosworth (Evo 1)

Hi

Just closed the one of a kind Merc 190 2.5 Litre, 16V, cosworth. 195 or is it 197 Bhp stock from the factory, M I N T condition car. It is a 7.2 second car, as in 0-100

Had been chasing this dream, which was sitting in a collector's garage since the past few years & saw the roads & tarmac every 15 days or so.

No more details for the present. Once the car is in my hands - the pictures shall do the talking

I am like an excited kid - hope it turns out to be worthy of my excitement !

Cheers

This is the last car Kari ever graced with his presence, unless there are 2 of them in India. It's a legend on so many different levels. Congrats!

I think you better touch base with Gogi v-16 if it is the Kari one. He looked at it in a lot of depth

Hi Ricky, as Ajmat put it, i was offered this ex Kari car (if your car is the same one, besides, the existance of a second Evo in India would definitely be news to me)
The car I saw was Dark blue and was, for want of a better word a heap. Nothing worked. When started (with a great amount of effort) it was missing like no body's business and was smoking more than Fidel Castro with his cigar. The car was very very low slung, almost like a low rider even when started, that meant the air suspension also failed to respond.

The seats were torn and the side panels (all four of them) had a jeering gap. This must have been due to the number of times they might have been removed and put back.

The next time i went around to see it (around two months from my first visit) the car was in a worse shape. The valve cover was off and the car looked worse.

To beat everything the guy could not produce papers for it. I would recommend the following checks on it.

1) Match the engine and chassis number with the one on the book. Also check if these numbers correspond with the Evo series, as i have many times seen that papers of another similar car are used to register the one without papers.

2) The rear should have Captain seats or individual buckets like in the CLS

3) If the Air suspension does not work or if the car is missing, please let it go. Expect a very large bill for parts which are not very easily available and none of which match with the 190E.

Please let me know if you need any help in the matter.

If the car is not the Kari car then still check out all the above and make sure its an Evo and not a indigenous cosmetic job.

WOW, thanks for all the inputs. There is obviously some confusion here.

@ Speedsport
The car you have driven or been driven in is a 2.5 16V (Karivardhan's cousin's car)

@ V-16
The Blue car you are talking of is surely not an Evo 1, as the car came only in limited colours of which blue is not one of them (AFAIK blue was available in the 2.3 & not the 2.5). Unless ofcourse it was repainted.

The car you saw also seems to have been in shambles, maybe still is.

# The car that I am looking at is in original factory paint.
# The copy of the RC is with me for verification with the RTO.
# The car still drives & feels like brand new.
# The car is running a set of new shockers. (I agree the self leveling ones cost a bomb)
# It is running a new clutch & suspension bushes (both replaced less than 2k miles before)
# The car has original leather seats.

So maybe there are 2 of a kind in the country afterall. There is also an EVO II, in North India. Chandigarh to be precise.

But thanks very much for your inputs, shall certainly keep them in mind.

Posting a video that explains the self - levelling suspension.

Below are the detail of the Merc Cosworth. Source :- Wikipedia

Due to their performance, the 16 valve cars were different from the other 190 models. The body kit on the 2.3-16 and 2.5-16 reduced the drag coefficient to 0.32, one of the lowest cd values on a four door saloon of the time, whilst also reducing lift at speed. The steering ratio was quicker and the steering wheel smaller than that on other 190s, whilst the fuel tank was enlarged from 55 to 70 L. The Getrag 5-speed gearbox was unique to the 16 valve and featured a 'racing' gear pattern with 'dog-leg' first gear, left and down from neutral. This meant that the remaining 2nd, 3rd, 4th and 5th gears were in a simple H pattern allowing fast and easy selection. The gearchange quality was, however, noted as "notchy, baulky"[4], criticisms also levelled at the BMW M3 (E30) which shared the same gearbox. An oil cooler was fitted to ensure efficient oil cooling for the inevitable track use many of these cars were destined for.
The strictly four-seater interior had Recaro sports seats with strong side bolsters for front and rear passengers. 3 extra dials - an oil temperature gauge, stopwatch and voltmeter - were included in the centre console. The 190 E 2.3-16 was available in only two colours, Blue-Black metallic (Pearl Black in the US), and Smoke Silver (which looks gold). The 2.5-16 added Almandine Red and Astral Silver.
All 2.3-16 valve 190 models are fitted with a Limited Slip Differential (LSD) as standard. They were also available with Mercedes' ASD system which was standard equipment on the 2.5-16v. The ASD is an electronically controlled, hydraulically locking differential which activates automatically when required. The electronic control allows varied amounts of differential lock from the standard 15% right up to 100%. It is not a traction control system however, and can only maximize traction rather than prevent wheel spin. Activation of the ASD system is indicated by an illuminating amber triangle in the speedometer.
The suspension on 16 valve models is very different from the standard 190 (W201). As well as being lower and stiffer, it has quicker dampers, larger anti-roll bars, harder bushings and hydraulic Self-Levelling Suspension (SLS) on the rear. This allows the rear ride height to remain constant even when the car is fully loaded.
At the inauguration of the new, shorter Nürburgring in 1984, a race with identical cars was held, with former and current F1 pilots at the wheel. A rather unknown young driver named Ayrton Senna took First Place in that race.
Private Teams such as AMG later entered the 2.3-16 in touring cars races, especially the DTM. In the late 1980's, the 2.5-16 (never released in the United States) raced many times, against the similar BMW M3 and even the turbocharged Ford Sierra Cosworth.

Cheers

Looks like there are two "kari" owned cossies. The smoke siver one was in CBE- am not sure if it is still for sale. It looked in good condition, though I never saw it but I understand that the rear self levelling suspension was disconnected. I have pics, need to disguise the no plates

The blue one which gogi saw (which I thought was the same car uutil Gogi said it was blue) seems to be a heap.
