Default Is it possible to retrofit Passenger Airbag in a Toyota Innova?

As title please, I'd like to know if its possible to fit a passenger airbag in a GX model (which comes only with driver side airbag)?

Thanks

As far as i know, it is not possible to retrofit airbags, abs, tcs ebd etc. It has to be provided by the manufacturer.

Dont think so. Even if it is, am sure it will cost more than the top end innova.

If by some remote chance, it is possible, and cheaply so, pay only after making sure its working properly

Airbags & ABS ... No Retrofitting/After market fitting pls.
Better to have them equipped as OEM.

You can retrofit them(ofcourse with major modifications), but they may not work the same they are intent to.

Even if you can retrofit one, I guess you would end up testing the device with your life!

Thanks all. So is it better to invest 2L more for the top end Innova, assuming that airbags are absolutely necessary and effectively saves life?

Yes.

For Airbags, you'd need to change/install a lot of things - a dash to incorporate the passenger Airbag, crash sensors, wiring, probably a change in ECU etc.

That would be playing around too much with stock condition.

It's best you go for the top-end variant.

Someone said Airbags do more harm than good, is that so?

Can anyone confirm if Airbags can harm?

Thanks in advance

Yea, only financial harm. But then they makes up for it in countless way by saving lives.

Have heard that someone who's had a close call with Airbags does have a few bruises on the face though - understandable given the force with which they cushion your face in case of an impact.

It's probably safer to let the passenger hold a big pillow than let somebody retrofit an airbag to the car!

If the passenger is not wearing seatbelts, airbag deployment can apparently cause more harm than good.

Small children could even be killed if the airbag deploys. So that's why kids should be at the back. In some cars (like i20), you can switch off the passenger airbag though.

Yes, The intensity with which Airbags inflate, is very rapid and its almost like an explosion inside the airbag to make it inflate in 60-80 milliseconds after the first impact, also the passenger side airbags are larger (because the dashboard is further away) and hence needs more gas to inflate, and hence has stronger more vigorous explosion like mechanism.

This intensity of inflation (almost like explosive) can get someone injured especially kids, hence the rule to always put kids at the back.

And in an age/weight appropriate child seat.

Taking this to the next logical level, what about a vehicle like the Force One where even the highest trim variant lacks airbags and ABS? Is retrofitting an option here or is it, as smartcat suggests, a case of the solution being worse than the problem?

Well, Technically We can fit them as its nothing but an impact sensor that operates the Airbag.

In an Innova i would say maybe but It is not recommended though as it may not perform to its best capability when needed. I am sure the service centers would have put together a head-on collision Innova V, where they would have to replace the dash / sensors /Airbag etc. The same parts need to be added for E / G etc.

In a Force One - just steer clear and even if someone offers to fit - it would just burn your pocket.

Easier said than done, the ECU should support all this. An impact/crash sensor alone wont do the trick here, from what I have read most airbag systems would have a safety/arming sensors which are located at the passenger side, usually in the dash board or seat or airbag control module.

This safety sensor should ensure that the airbag shouldn't deploy unless a certain amount of deceleration/impact is experienced. I am sure the wiring alone will be a big thing to achieve with the kind of infrastructure and expertize we have in india.
