Most majors are good.

I will go totally by the API ratings. Only API-SJ, SL and SM are current. Others are history. This is for petrol. If you are driving a run of the mill car then Synthetic, Semi-synth, Mineral differences are not worth bothering. Make sure you meet the manufacturers recommendations. Then vote with your pocketbook - get the cheapest.

Hi Sumeet,

The MRP of Shell Helix Super 15W40, is 915Rs for 4 ltrs. I was also searching the Shell station of 15W40, but none of them has stock, so purchase Castrol Magnatec 4 ltr at 1160 Rs (bit costly but i didnt have time to search other shops so purchased).

For information of others,
Also changed: Oil filter: Purolater/Mhale: 70Rs
Air filter: Purolater/Mhale: 120Rs

Hope this helps.

Guys I need some advice,

During the 1st service of my SX4 (July 2009) I got Mobil-1 (0w-40) fully synthetic engine oil , Now the issue is that my 2nd service is due within this week,
so I wanted to know whether I should stick to the fully synthetic or switch to normal oil.

1. What would be advisable in the long run ?
(Taking into account various parameters such as performance, engine life and economy.)

2. Should I change to normal oil now and switch to fully synthetic during my 3rd service ?

P.S.: The car has 3900 kms till date and I plan to retain her for at least 7-8 years.

my ikon completed 1Lac Kms and i am planing to give it a vitamin treatment with OWS (engine Flush, engine oil addictive and Fuel line treatment) by myself. Ford dealers use 10w 30 engine oils from Mobil, shell or castrol. i am searching for the same in local oil dealers but not able to get (either 10w 30 or 5w 30) can i use 10w 40 ( castrol magnetic is available ) instead?. is it not littile more thicker compared to 10w 30. even though both of these oil have same viscosity at hot condition , will my engine not suffer in cold starts?
